Field Hockey To Host Bryant And Boston University To Open 2021 Campaign

Friars welcome Bryant on August 27 at 6:00 p.m., followed by a match against the Terriers on Sunday.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will open the 2021 fall season with a pair of home games against Bryant (Aug. 27) and Boston University (2:00 p.m.). Both games will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE:
• Providence was picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
• The Friars finished the abbreviated 2021 spring campaign with a 2-9 overall record. 
• Providence posted a 12-7 record during the 2019 season, including a 4-3 mark in the BIG EAST Conference.
• Junior midfielder Nora Goddard-Despot was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Goddard-Despot is currently in Santiago, Chile competing for Canada at the 2021 Junior Pan American Championships (Aug. 21-29).
• The Friars return five of their six points scorers from the spring season, including Niamh Gowing (five points) and Sophia Pompeo (four points).
• Gowing and current graduate student Olivia Ward each tallied double digits in the points column during 2019. Gowing recorded four goals and two assists (10 points), while Ward finished second on the team in goals scored (five) for 10 points.
• Fourteen of the 24 players on the Friars' roster are first and second-year players, who will embark on their first full fall season of collegiate field hockey.
• The remainder of the roster consists of two graduate students, three seniors and five juniors.
• Despite the team's youth, 12 players on the roster have experience in the starting line-up.
• Providence and Bryant last met on Sept 6, 2019. The Friars defeated the Bulldogs, 2-0.
• Providence and Boston University last met on Sept. 13, 2015. On that day, the Terriers earned a 3-0 win at New Balance Field in Boston, Mass.
 

SCOUTING BRYANT
• During the abbreviated 2021 spring schedule, Bryant posted a 1-7 overall record, including a 1-5 mark in the Northeast Conference 
• The Bulldogs return NFHCA All-Second Team All-Northeast Region selection Marijn Jaarsma in goal. She became the first player in NCAA Division I program history to earn All-Region honors for the Bulldogs. She completed the season with a 2.52 goals against average and a 0.821 save percentage.
• Sophomore Ashley Barron is the Bulldogs' leading returning scorer, having collected four points on two goals last spring.
• Bryant posted a 2-17 overall record in during the fall of 2019.
• Current junior Taryn Rauff led the Bulldogs in scoring during the 2019 campaign with eight points on four goals. 
 

SCOUTING BOSTON UNIVERSITY:
• The Terriers finished the abbreviated 2021 spring season with a 5-1 overall record (4-0 Patriot League).
• Boston University was picked to finish third in the Patriot League this fall (90 points), sitting just behind American (96 points) and Bucknell (93 points).
• Graduate student forward Miya Denison and sophomore midfielder Thalia Steenssens were each named to the Patriot League's Preseason All-League Team.
• Rebecca Janes also returns to the line-up, having tallied a team-best 11 points on four goals and three assists last spring.
• Boston University posted a 6-12 overall record during the fall of 2019.
• The Terriers open their season against Monmouth on August 27 in Boston, Mass., before making the trip to Providence on Sunday.
