Asia Porter recorded 12 saves; Niamh Gowing netted game winner in fourth quarter.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated regional-foe Boston University, 2-1, in non-conference action on Sunday, Aug. 29.
1ST QUARTER:
• It was a scoreless opening quarter as Boston University held a 4-2 advantage in shots.
• Providence and BU each registered a penalty corner during the opening 15 minutes.
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence took a 1-0 lead at 18:11 as graduate student Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) was credited with the goal as she positioned herself directly in front of the cage and one-timed a feed from senior Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland). Gowing entered the circle from the right baseline and dished a perfect feed for the score.
• The Terriers tied the game, 1-1, at 26:12 on a penalty corner opportunity. Payton Anderson scored on a direct shot, assisted by Rebecca Janes and Casey Thompson.
• At the half, the Terriers held advantages in shots (7-3) and penalty corners (4-1).
3RD QUARTER:
• Boston University was the dominant force on the field in the third quarter, but the Friars' defense was up to the challenge.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) was tested throughout, making four saves in the frame.
• The Terriers held a 5-1 advantage in shots (4-1 shots on goal).
• The offense was spurred by a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners, but Providence denied the Terriers entry to the goal each time.
4TH QUARTER:
• Gowing scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 1:24 into the fourth quarter (46:24).
• Lisa McNamara (Barre, Vt.) fed a ball in from the top of the circle, and Gowing did well juggle a bouncing ball before sending it into the back of the cage.
• The Terriers pulled their goalkeeper in favor of an extra attacker at 55:58, but again, the Providence defense stood firm to take the victory.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
• Porter was impressive in goal for Providence, making 12 saves in her season debut.
• Boston University held the upper hand in shots (16-5) and corners (11-1), but it was the Friars who took advantage of their opportunities on offense.
• Prior to today's meeting, the last game between Providence and Boston University dates back to Sept. 13, 2015.
• The Terriers had earned victories in each of the last six meetings until the Friars' 2-1 victory this afternoon.
• Providence improved to 2-0 on the 2021 season with its victory over BU. It marks the Friars' first 2-0 start to a season since 2014. That year, Providence defeated Vermont (5-1) and Lock Haven (2-1, 2OT).

• The Friars hit the road for a pair of games in Orono, Maine next weekend. On Sept. 4, Providence will face Maine at 2:00 p.m. On Sept. 5, the Friars will face Harvard in a neutral-site match at 1:00 p.m.
