PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will play a pair of non-conference games in Orono, Maine this weekend. On Sept. 4, the Friars will face the Maine Black Bears at 2:00 p.m. Providence will return to action on Sept. 5 against No. 19 Harvard at 1:00 p.m.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE:
• Providence enters the weekend with a 2-0 record.
• The Friars defeated Bryant, 4-0, on Aug. 27 and followed with a 2-1 victory over Boston University on Aug. 29.
• Junior
Lisa McNamara (Barre, Vt.) leads the team in scoring with five points on one goal and three assists. She recorded a career-high four points in the Friars' victory against Bryant (1g/2a).
• Graduate student
Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) is second on the team in points (four) with a team-best two goals.

Roos Michiels (Noord-Brabrant, The Netherlands) was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after making her collegiate debut for the Friars on opening weekend. She scored her first career goal and helped anchor a defense that gave up just one goal in two games.
• Sophomore
Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. She made her season debut in the cage on Aug. 29 in a 2-1 victory over Boston University. She withstood heavy offensive pressure from the Terriers, as the Friars were outshot 16-5 (13-4 SOG). The Terriers also were awarded 11 offensive corners. Porter earned the victory with 12 saves.
• Providence was picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
• Junior midfielder
Nora Goddard-Despot was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Goddard-Despot recently returned from Santiago, Chile, where she competed for Canada at the 2021 Junior Pan American Championships (Aug. 21-29). The Canadians won the gold medal. She is scheduled to make her 2021 season debut with the Friars this weekend against Maine and Harvard.
• Fourteen of the 24 players on the Friars' roster are first and second-year players, who will embark on their first full fall season of collegiate field hockey.
• The remainder of the roster consists of two graduate students, three seniors and five juniors.
• Despite the team's youth, 12 players on the roster have experience in the starting line-up.
• Providence and Maine last met on Sept. 1, 2019. The Friars came away with a 5-4 victory in overtime. The Black Bears were ranked 24
th in the nation at the time of the game. Goddard-Despot, who was a freshman at the time, scored the game-winning goal 2:46 into the overtime period. It marked her first collegiate goal.
• Ward and current senior
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) also scored goals in the win over Maine in 2019.
• Harvard and Providence will face one another for the first time since the 2012 season. The series is split 13-13-1 in 27 meetings all time.
SCOUTING MAINE:
• Maine enters the weekend with an 0-2 record, with both losses coming in overtime.
• Maine fell to No. 7 Boston College, 3-2, in overtime on Aug. 28 and followed with a 3-2 overtime loss to UMass on Aug. 29.
• The Black Bears will face No. 19 Harvard on Sept. 3 before hosting the Friars on Sept. 4.
• Hana Davis leads Maine in points (four) and goals (two). Her two goals have come on just three shot attempts overall.
• Mia Borley has played all 124 minutes in the cage and owns a 2.91 goals against average and a 0.714 save percentage. She was in the cage vs. the Friars in 2019 and made five saves in the 5-4 (OT) loss.
• The five goals the Friars recorded against Borley are tied for the most goals she has allowed in a single-game during her career.
SCOUTING HARVARD:
• Harvard opens its season against Maine on Sept. 3 before facing the Friars on Sept. 5 in Orono, Maine.
• The Crimson are ranked 19
th in the NFHCA Preseason Coaches' Poll, however, the team has not played a game in nearly two years.
• Harvard returns two of its top three scorers from the 2019 season in Rachel Greenwood (9g/4a) and Mimi Tarrant (8g/6a).
• The Crimson finished the 2019 season with a 13-4 overall record, including a 6-1 mark in the Ivy League (second place).
• Heading into the 2021 season, Harvard was picked to finish second in the Ivy League Preseason Media Poll, earning three first-place votes and 112 points. Harvard is seeking its third Ivy League title in the last five seasons.
