PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to the University of Maine, 2-1, in double-overtime on Sept. 4 in Orono, Maine. It marked the Friars' first loss of the season as they drop to 2-1 on the young season. Maine, who has played four-straight overtime games to start the year, improved to 1-3.
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence got the first two offensive chances of the game as
Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) was denied by the Black Bear goalkeeper at the left post, and
Amanda Collins' (San Diego, Calif.) shot off a corner also was saved.
• Maine took an early 1-0 lead just 4:33 into the match as Brooke Sulinski flipped in a backhanded effort during a scrum from five yards out near the left post.
• The Black Bears held a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard after the opening 15 minutes of play.
2nd QUARTER:
• The teams were scoreless in the second quarter as Maine held a 3-2 edge in shots and 2-0 advantage in penalty corners.
• The Black Bears took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
3rd QUARTER:
• Providence outshot Maine 2-1 in the third quarter, but was unable to find the equalizer.
• Heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation, Providence held advantages in shots (6-5) and shots on goal (5-4). Maine recorded a slight advantage in penalty corners (5-4).
4th QUARTER:
• The Friars tied the game, 1-1, just 1:30 into the final frame as senior
Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) netted her second goal of the season. Gowing collected a 50/50 ball on the doorstep of the cage before finding the back of the net, unassisted.
• Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie and the two teams headed to overtime.
• After 60 minutes of action, the teams were deadlocked in shot attempts (8-8) and shots on goal (7-7). The Black Bears held a 6-5 edge in corners.
OVERTIME:
• The Black Bears outshot the Friars 3-0 and recorded two penalty corners in the first 10-minute overtime period, but the game remained tied, 1-1.
• In the second overtime, the Black Bears were awarded two penalty corners inside the first two minutes of action, but the Friars' defense stood tall.
• The Friars got two shots off, both on target, before the Black Bears managed the game-winning goal with just 1:20 remaining on the clock.
• Poppy Lambert was credited with the goal during a penalty corner, assisted by Tereza Holubcova.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
• It marked the second-straight game between the Friars and Black Bears decided in overtime.
• The last was in 2019, as Providence took a 5-4 win in OT in Orono, Maine.
• It was the first overtime game for Providence during the 2021 campaign, while all four of Maine's games to start the season have been decided in OT.
• The Black Bears finished the game with a 14-10 advantage in shots (11-9 SOG).
• Maine also recorded a 12-6 edge in corners. Six of Maine's corners came during the overtime periods.
• Providence goalkeeper
Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) made nine saves in the match.
• Mia Borley stopped eight shots for the Black Bears.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action tomorrow [Sept. 5] against No. 19 Harvard. The game will be played at the University of Maine and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Crimson are coming off of a 2-1 overtime victory against the Black Bears in their season opener on Sept. 3.
