Women’s Soccer Selected Fourth In BIG EAST Preseason Poll

Meg Hughes was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
Providence, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team was picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll with 65 points and one first-place vote. Georgetown, who earned a No. 11 ranking in the 2021 United Soccer Coaches Preseason National Poll, topped the BIG EAST with 100 points and ten first place votes. Sophomore forward Meg Hughes was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. The BIG EAST released its 2021 Preseason Coaches' Poll and preseason honors today (Aug. 12).
The Friars are looking to return to the BIG EAST Tournament for the seventh time in eight years under the guidance of Head Coach Sam Lopes. In last year's abbreviated season, Providence finished with a 7-2-3 overall record including a 5-2-3 mark in BIG EAST play.
Hughes, named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team last season, played in all 12 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting lineup four times. She led Providence in points (14), assists (six) and was tied for first on the team in goals (four).
Providence College will open the season at the University of Rhode Island (Aug. 19) before returning to Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium for their home opener against the Sacred Heart Pioneers (Aug. 25). Three of the Friar's next five matches will then be played on the road before returning home to end non-conference play against Brown University (Sept. 16). BIG EAST Conference play begins at home against Xavier on Sept. 23.
