Eleven Friars Named to NEILA All-Academic Team

Axelson, Burgdorf, Higgins, Hinrichs, Jennings, McGreen, Nawrocki, Romeo, Shaw, Tommasi and Zimmerman were the honorees.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Eleven members of the Providence College men's lacrosse team were featured on the 2021 Division I NEILA All-Academic Team. The list of Friars includes Dan Axelson (Cohasset, Mass.), Toby Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J.), Troy Higgins (Summit, N.J.), Tim Hinrichs (Amherst, N.H.), Emmett Jennings (Fair Haven, N.J.), Evan McGreen (Narragansett, R.I.), Ryan Nawrocki (Smithtown, N.Y.), RJ Romeo (Wilton, Conn.), Nick Shaw (Canton, Mass.), Nick Tommasi (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and Ryan Zimmerman (Syracuse, N.Y.).
 
In order to be selected for the team, a student-athlete must be a senior and hold a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Additionally, the nominee must be a significant contributor on the field, having at least earned consideration for All-Conference selection. Providence had the second most candidates honored of all institutions.

Axelson, a 2021 All-BIG EAST Second-Team selection, played in all 13 games for the Friars, with 12 appearances in the starting line-up. He finished third on the team in points (28), having recorded a career-high 21 goals and seven assists. Axelson notched three hat-tricks on the year and added seven groundballs with one caused turnover.
 
Burgdorf started all 13 games in net for the Friars. Ranking 16th in the nation in saves per game (12.54), he also recorded a .509 save percentage and 12.36 goals against average. He amassed numerous recognitions for his performance throughout the season and was named a USILA Preseason All-American and Preseason Inside Lacrosse Maverik Media All-American. He is a three-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week (Feb. 3, Mar. 13, Apr. 20). and two-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection (Mar. 24, Apr. 20). Additionally, he earned All-BIG EAST Second Team accolades.
 
Higgins appeared in all 13 games for the Friars. He grabbed five groundballs and caused two turnovers.
 
Hinrichs recorded 22 points on 16 goals and six assists in 12 games this season. The graduate student midfielder was fourth on the team in goals and had two hat-tricks this season. Hinrich was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and earned his second BIG EAST postseason honor this season. Hinrichs led Friar's midfield in the USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game (May 29) with two goals.

Jennings, who helped to anchor the Friars' defensive unit, earned All-BIG EAST Second-Team recognition at the conclusion of the 2021 season. He started all 13 games and led the team in caused turnovers (12) and ranked third in groundballs (33). Jennings picked up a season-high five groundballs against Bryant on Feb. 13.
 
McGreen played in 10 games this season, including two appearances in the starting line-up. He recorded 13 points on eight goals and two assists off of 57 shots. Additionally, he picked up seven groundballs and caused two turnovers. 
 
Nawrocki, a 2021 All-BIG EAST Second-Team honoree, started all 13 games for Providence. He led the team in points (33) and assists (21), with both totals marking single-season career highs. Nawrocki also added 12 goals, nine groundballs and one caused turnover. He tallied the game-winning goal against St. John's on Feb. 21, finishing the game with a career-high six points overall on two goals and four assists. 
 
Romeo appeared in all 13 games for the Friars. He led the team in groundballs (56) and went 146-of-290 from the face-off 'X' for a .503 winning percentage. He was selected to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team and was named BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week (Feb. 21) in additional to earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (Mar. 13).

Shaw appeared in all 13 games for the Friars and finished the year ranked second among his teammates in groundballs, with 35. He collected a single-game career high of seven groundballs against Marquette on April 17. Shaw also registered seven points during the 2021 season on four goals and three assists and caused three turnovers.
 
Tomassi played in all 13 games, making four starts for the Friars. He was fourth on the team in groundballs (29) and caused 10 turnovers.
 
Zimmerman appeared in all 13 games, with 10 appearances in the starting line-up. He ranked second in points (29), second in assists (10) and third in goals (19). He posted single-season career highs in each offensive category. Additionally, he picked up 19 groundballs and caused two turnovers.
