NEW YORK, N.Y.- It was announced today (May 20) that seven Friars had earned All-BIG EAST Track & Field honors. The All-BIG EAST squad is comprised of BIG EAST competitors who finished in the top-three in any individual or relay event at the championships, which were held on May 14-15 in Geneva, Ohio.
On day one of the Championship,
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.),
Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) and
Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) swept the 10,000 meter race. Wheeler took gold and crossed the line in 33:50.07. Mooney took second place (34:19.60) and O'Connor set a personal best with her third-place finish (34:37.21). It was Wheeler's first time competing in the 10,000 meter race collegiately.
Senior
Chris Shanahan (Westwood, Mass.) placed third in the javelin (63.51 meters), setting a school record and achieving a personal best.
On day two, Wheeler, Mooney, sophomore
Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.), and senior
Dana Lowney (Easton, Mass.) earned bronze in the 4x800 relay in a time of 8:53.26. Sophomore
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) also earned a bronze medal in the 5,000 meters (16:12.39).
On the men's side, graduate student
AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) took home a silver medal, finishing second in the 1,500 meters (3:45.21).
Wheeler is the only Friar to bring in multiple All-BIG EAST honors, earning recognition for her performance in both the 10,000 meter race and 4x800 relay.
The Friars are set to compete in the first round of the NCAA Championships in Jacksonville, Fla. beginning on Wednesday, May 26.
