New York, N.Y.- The BIG EAST announced its annual women's soccer awards today [Apr. 15]. Providence College was well-represented, having earned one major award and was accompanied by five All-BIG EAST selections.
Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. Additionally, she was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and the All-Freshman Team. Hughes is the second player in program history to earn BIG EAST Freshman of the Year.
Shelby Hogan '20 was the first, when she won the award in 2017. Hughes appeared in all 12 games for the Friars and cracked the starting lineup four times. She led the Friars in points (14), assists (six) and tied for the team lead in goals (four). On March 28
th against Seton Hall, Hughes tallied a season-high five points on one goal and three assists. Hughes ended the regular-season ranked among the top-10 in five different statistical categories in the BIG EAST. Hughes ranks second in assists per game (.50), overall assists (six) and shot accuracy (.625). Additionally, she ranks fifth in total points (14) and seventh in points per game (1.17).
Alexis Rothmann (Norwell, Mass.) earned All-BIG EAST First Team Honors. In 2019, she was named to the All-Freshman Team. Rothmann started in all nine games she appeared in for the Friars. Rothmann played a pivotal role for the Friars in the midfield.
Christina Rodgers (Scotch Plains, N.J.) earned All-BIG EAST Second Team Honors. Rodgers started in all 12 games for the Friars and played all 1,140 minutes on the back line. Rodgers scored the game-tying goal on a penalty kick against St. John's on April 11
th. She played a key role in the Friars' defense that recorded six shutouts this season.
Avery Snead (Wrentham, Mass.) was named to the All-Freshman Team. Snead started in all 12 Friar games this season and played 1,100 minutes on the back line. Snead scored two game-winning goals against UConn on March 4 and Seton Hall on March 11. Snead played a key role in helping the defense record six clean sheets.
Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) earned All-Freshman Team Honors with Hughes and Snead. Bodmer started all 12 games in net for the Friars. Bodmer had four shut-outs and two combined shut-outs. Bodmer had a 7-2-3 record, 42 saves and a .857 save percentages. Bodmer allowed the fewest goals allowed in a season (seven) in program history.
All-BIG EAST Teams and major awards are voted on by the league's head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own players. All-BIG EAST First and Second Teams are comprised of three forwards, three midfielders, three defenders, one goalkeeper and one at-large selection. The BIG EAST All-Freshman Team recognizes the top-11 freshman vote earners. Extra players may be added if there was a tie in voting.
