Volleyball Defeats UConn, 3-1, In BIG EAST Match-Up

Emma Nelson paced the Friars with 14 kills.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team defeated Connecticut in BIG EAST play, 3-1, on Friday night at Alumni Hall [Mar. 12]. Providence improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST, while Connecticut dropped to 2-5 (2-3 BIG EAST).
 
SET 1:
• The set was tied seven times, with the Friars holding off the Huskies on each occasion.
• The Friars got out to a three-point lead on two occasions at 16-13 and again at 20-17.
• The Huskies called a timeout trailing 20-17 and scored the next two points out of the break to get within 20-19.
• After a Providence timeout, Emma Fink and Emma Nelson registered back-to-back kills to go ahead 22-19.
• The Friars went on to win the set, 25-21. 
• Nelson recorded five kills on eight attacking opportunities to hit for .625 in the set.
Jennifer Leitman recorded a set-high seven digs.
 
SET 2:
• The Huskies took their first lead of the match at 3-2 of the second set – and also would take 4-3 and 5-4 advantages.
• Providence rallied to take an 10-5 lead, fueled by four UConn errors two kills by Elena Leontaridou
• UConn called timeout and then answered with three-straight points to get within 10-8.
• Leotaridou responded once again for the Friars, notching back-to-back kills and giving her team a 13-8 edge.
• A ball handling error followed by an attacking error put UConn in a 14-8 hole.
• After a timeout, UConn battled back to score nine of the next 10 points to take a 17-15 lead.
• Providence battled back to tie the set at 18-18.
• The Huskies closed out the set with a 6-4 scoring advantage to take a 25-22 victory.
• Leontaridou recorded six kills for the Friars on seven total attempts.
   
SET 3:
• The Friars jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the third set and mounted an 8-2 advantage to force a UConn timeout.
• Providence held the momentum out of the break as Allison Barber registered just her second kill of the match (9-2).
• Connecticut closed the gap to 11-8 before Leitman laid down a lazer and UConn's reception caromed out of play.
• Leitman's kill sparked a run of three-straight points to push the Friars' lead to 14-8.
• UConn managed to get as close as four on several occasions, but the Friars closed the set in dominant fashion, earning a 25-16 win.
 
SET 4:
• Connecticut jumped out to an 8-4 lead, but Leitman dropped the hammer for Providence with two kills in a four-point stretch to tie the game, 8-8. Barber and Leontaridou also added one kill each in the run.
• With the set tied, 9-9, UConn responded to score three-straight points to go ahead 12-9.
• Providence chipped away, bringing the set to within one point on several occasions before tying it up at 17-17 and eventually claiming the lead at 19-17.
• Connecticut evened the set 19-19, but the Friars would grind out the next three points, including big kills from Nelson and Fink, giving PC a 22-19 edge.
• Providence went on to win the set, 25-20, and take the match, 3-1. 
 
NOTES:
• Nelson led the Friars with 14 kills, marking the fourth time in five matches she has reached double digits.
• Leitman and Leontaridou each finished the night with 12 kills, while Fink rounded out the leaders with 11.
• Leontaridou hit a blistering .526 in the match, as the team overall hit .283 on the night.
• Barber recorded 45 assists and led the team in digs (16). 
• Four players recorded double-digit digs on the night, for a team total of 64.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars and Huskies will finish the regular-season series against one another on Saturday, March 13. The match will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
