Volleyball Sweeps Season Series With UConn

Allison Barber recorded 39 assists and 10 digs for the Friars.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team claimed a 3-1 victory against Connecticut on March 13 in Providence, R.I to sweep the season-series with the Huskies and improve to 5-1 on the season (3-1 BIG EAST). UConn dropped to 2-6 (2-4 BIG EAST). 
 
SET 1:
• Providence got out to a lead of four on three occasions before UConn fought back to tie the set, 11-11.
• The Friars scored six-straight points to gain a 21-14 advantage on the scoreboard. The run featured two service aces by Mackenzie Taylor.
• UConn scored five of the next seven points to creep within 23-19.
• The Huskies fought off three-straight opportunities to by the Friars, but Providence would prevail, 25-22.
Jennifer Leitman, Emma Fink and Emma Nelson each recorded three kills for the Friars.
 
SET 2:
• The set was tied 3-3 in the early going before the Huskies rattled off three-straight points to take a 6-3 advantage.
• Providence fought back to tie the match 9-9, but UConn eight of the next nine points to take a 17-10 lead.
• UConn was strong down the stretch, winning seven of the last eight points to earn a decisive 25-13 victory in Set 2 and even the match at 1-1.
• Providence was plagued by eight attacking errors in the set, while the Huskies provided a strong presence at the net to record eight blocks.
   
SET 3:
• The third set was a back-and-forth affair.
• Neither team was able to mount a lead larger than three, until the Friars claimed a four-point margin (20-16).
• The Huskies cut the deficit to 20-18 with back-to-back points, but freshman Maryanne Boyle recorded her second kill of the set to give Providence a 21-18 cushion.
• Boyle, Nelson and Elena Leontaridou recorded consecutive kills to put the Friars up 24-20.
• UConn answered with back-to-back kills to stay alive in the set (24-22) and Providence followed with a timeout.
• The Huskies closed within 24-23 Courtney Morris and Genna Florig teamed up to block a Nelson attempt at the net.
• Nelson got her chance on the Friars' next attack, laying down the winner (25-23).
• Nelson paced Providence with five kills, while Boyle and Leitman finished with three kills each.

SET 4:
• The Friars gained an 11-5 edge that was fueled by five-straight points.
• Providence got four of the next five points, including two kills by Boyle to take a 16-8 edge. Addison Witte and Leitman also contributed kills during the run.
• Providence maintained its form down the stretch to take a 25-19 victory in the set to sweep the weekend series against UConn.
 
NOTES:
• Nelson recorded a team-high 12 kills in the match for Providence, followed by 11 from Leitman. 
• Boyle finished the night with five kills, including three in the third and two in the fourth.
• Taylor led the defensive effort with a team-high 12 digs. She also recorded three service aces and three assists.
• Barber recorded a team-high 39 assists.
• Providence improved to 3-1 in the BIG EAST, marking its best start in league in the eight seasons since rejoining the league in 2014.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on March 19-20 with a pair of BIG EAST regular-season matches against St. John's. Opening serve is set for 3:00 p.m. each day in Queens, N.Y.
