QUEENS, N.Y. - The Providence College volleyball team was downed by the St. John's Red Storm in four sets, 16-25, 21-25, 25-20, 21-25 on Friday, March 19 in Queens, N.Y. St. Johns improves to a 4-2 BIG EAST record, 8-3 overall. Providence drops to 5-2 overall, 3-2 in BIG EAST play.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Red Storm rattled off five straight points to grab an early lead the set, 5-2. St. John's held the lead for the rest of the set, including a 5-2 run to finish the set, 25-16.
Emma Fink (Western Springs, Ill.) had a set-high three kills to go with three blocks.
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) led the team with four assists.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's held the lead the entire set after an early tie at 5-5, winning the set, 25-21.
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) led the Friars with three kills.
Barber recorded eight out of ten total assists for Providence.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Friars held the lead after a 5-5 tie, until the Red Storm tied it again at 17-17, but Providence was able to hold St. John's off for a 25-20 set victory.
Fink registered 3 kills and Rudich added two more.
Barber tallied four assists and
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) added two.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence jumped out to an early lead, 5-1, but St. John's fought back to claim the final set, 25-21, after a neck and neck battle including four ties.
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) recorded five kills in the final set.
Barber recorded 12 assists in the set, a match high.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
Leitman and Fink paced the Friar offense with ten kills each.
Barber recorded 28 assists and eight digs.
Taylor was the only Friars with double-double digs, recording 19.
As a team, the Friars registered 41 kills on 139 total attacks, 54 digs and 38 assists.
WHAT'S NEXT: Providence returns tomorrow, March 20, for the second match in the series against the Red Storm.
