PROVIDENCE, R.I.- On Saturday, Oct. 16 the Providence College men's lacrosse program hosted its annual alumni game and awards banquet to recognize outstanding player and team accomplishments from the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
"We are so grateful for the turnout, engagement and effort of our over 40 alumni who attended our Banquet and Alumni Game this past weekend." Head Coach
Chris Gabrielli said. "Our presenters were terrific, and really helped connect our Program's proud past to the present, and it was nice to celebrate the many athletic and academic achievements of the 2020 and 2021 teams."
The current team, alumni, family and friends gathered in Schneider Arena to celebrate the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Following the banquet, the 2022 roster defeated the alumni in overtime, 12-11.
The Providence College men's lacrosse team celebrated their 39 student-athletes who made the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, marking the most all time. The Friars finished the year with a cumulative team GPA of 3.29, with 11 Friars named to the NEILA All-Academic Team.
Matt Grillo '22 (Setauket, N.Y.),
Matt Murakami '22 (Long Grove, Ill.), and
Mike O'Grady '22 (Milton, Mass.) were inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honors Society. In the Spring of 2020,
Dylan O'Donnell '21 (Coventry, R.I.),
Owen Martinson '21 (Milton, Mass.) and
Evan McGreen '21, MBA '22 (Narragansett, R.I.) were also inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma.
The Rookie of the Year was presented to
Chris Cusolito '24 (Melrose, Mass.) by Brendan Kearns '19. Cusolito appeared in all 13 games of the season, tallying two goals, four assists and 19 groundballs. Known for acting as the "spark plug" that ignited the team with in-your-face defense, explosive speed, tough ground balls and immediate offense in transition, Cusolito was an asset throughout his freshman season.
The Steve O'Donnell Coach's Award was presented to
Mike O'Grady '22 (Milton, Mass.) and
Nick Tommasi '20, MBA '21 (Pittsburg, Pa.). O'Grady played in 12 games last season and scored one goal versus Fairfield. Tommasi appeared in all 13 games in his final season a Friar, tallying 29 ground balls, the fourth highest on the team. The award is named after former Providence College lacrosse coach Steve O'Donnell, who is currently the head coach at La Salle Academy. Coach O'Donnell was on hand at the banquet to present the award and share a few words.
Matt Gould '22 (Darien, Conn.),
Grant Latimer '23 (Topsfield, Mass.), and
Ryan Zimmerman '20, MBA '21 (Syracuse, N.Y.) were co-recipients of the Most Improved Players Award, presented by Ken Leahy '00. Gould appeared in 13 games with 12 starts, picked up 16 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers. Latimer appeared in all 10 games with eight starts and tallied 20 ground balls and caused 11 turnovers. Zimmerman stated all 13 games for the Friars, tallying 19 goals and 10 assists for the second most points on the team (29).
The Jay Sabitoni "Hammer" Award was given to Rocco Romeo '20, MBA '21 (Wilton, Conn.). The award is named after one of the most physical players in program history, Jay Sabitoni '87. The award was presented by former recipient Dave Procoppio '19. The honor recognizes the player who displays persistent toughness, fearlessness and physicality on the field. Romeo's graduate student campaign featured appearances in all 13 games. He picked up 56 ground balls and recorded one assist.
Owen Martinson '21 (Milton, Mass.) earned the Academic Achievement Award, presented by Austin Goltz '17, MBA '18. Martinson graduated double majored in finance and business economics. He graduated Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.82, one of the highest in program history. Martinson earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in three different semesters during his time at Providence and is starting his career as a Research Analyst at Financial Technology Partners in San Francisco, Ca.
Dylan O'Donnell '21 was honored with the Best Teammate Award. This award is presented to distinguished individuals who display selflessness and consistently prioritizes the team through leadership on and off the field. The award was presented by Tyler Wilks '19, the winner of the Best Teammate Award in 2019.
The Mike Chapey Offensive MVP Award was presented to
Ryan Nawrocki '20, MBA '21(Smithtown, N.Y.) by Kyle Ojakian '02. Nawrocki led the Friars in points (33) in just 13 games in 2021, scoring 12 goals and dishing out 21 assists. Nawrocki completed his career 11
th All-Time in career assists (60) and 17
th All-Time in career points (116) on 56 goals and 60 assists.
Toby Burgdorf '21 (Westfield, N.J.) was awarded The Brian O'Rorke Defensive MVP Award by former recipient Tate Boyce '19. Burgdorf racked up many accolades during his time as a Friar including Captain, the athletic department's Mal Brown Award, and Tewaaraton Watch List. Burgdorf was also named to the 2
nd Team All-BIG EAST in 2021, a multiple time recipient of the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week and a 2020 Inside Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-American. In the 2021 season, Burgdorf recorded double digit saves in 10 out of 13 games, including 20 saves versus Georgetown. The goalkeeper totaled 157 saves on the season.
The Mark Cordon "Heart and Soul" Award was presented to
Tim Hinrichs '20, MBA '21 (Amherst, N.H.) and
Nick Shaw '20, MBA '21 (Canton, Mass.). The award recognizes an individual who displays leadership and exemplified qualities of hard work and dedication. The award is given annually in memory of Mark C. Cordon '89 who tragically lost his battle with cancer in October of 1998. It is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a lacrosse student-athlete at Providence College. The 2017 recipient of the award, Jimmy Cunningham '17, presented the award to Hinrichs and Shaw. Hinrichs netted 16 goals and 6 assists for 22 points on the season over 12 games as the fifth-leading scorer for the Friars. Shaw appeared in all 13 games, scoring four goals and three assists for seven points and tallied 35 ground balls, the second most on the team.
Mark Dillon '07, '09MBA was awarded The Spignesi/Horrigan Alumni Award. The award is named after Dr. Tom Spignesi '77 and John Horrigan '91 and Sean Horrigan '91. Spignesi founded and coached the first lacrosse teams at Providence College and spearheaded the transition of the program to a varsity sport. Sean Horrigan '91 and John Horrigan '91 were standout players for the Friars and have continued to be leaders in galvanizing the support of alumni to elevate the program. Mark Dillon has exemplified all of the characteristics of a loyal Friar with his continued financial support of the program as well as his willingness to assist student-athletes with career networking opportunities. The award was presented by Associate Athletic Director,
Kevin Connolly.
