PROVIDENCE, R.I.-The Providence College volleyball team lost two matches on Saturday, Sept. 21 to conclude the 2019 Dog Pound Challenge in Storrs, Conn., hosted by UConn. Providence forced a fifth set in both matches against Holy Cross and UConn. The Friars finished the tournament 0-3, falling to 5-8 on the season.
Natalie Benson (Bourbonnais, Ill.) earned All-Tournament team honors.
Holy Cross Highlights-The Friars fell to the Crusaders in five sets, 25-9, 25-16, 23-25, 22-25, 9-15. Providence took the first two sets convincingly before Holy Cross battled back in the remaining three sets. Providence had defeated Holy Cross in the previous two matches (2016, 2017). Holy Cross improved to 3-10 on the year.
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) tallied her tenth double-double of the year with a match-high 45 assists and 12 digs.
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) recorded a match-high 19 attacks on 52 total attacks, along with nine digs and 22.5 total points.
Benson registered a team-high 20 digs.
As a team, the Friars had 58 kills on 167 total attacks, 71 digs, 54 assists and ten team blocks.
UConn Highlights- Providence took the Huskies to five sets but fell short, 25-23, 21-25, 18-25, 25-16, 7-15. UConn improves to 6-6 on the season after going 3-0 in the tournament.
Addison Witte (Troy, Mo.) had a team-high 11 kills on 23 total attacks and was one of three Friars with double-digit kills.
Barber collected her eleventh double-double of the season with 47 assists and 19 digs.
Benson had a match-high 20 digs and was one of four Friars with double-digit digs.
Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) recorded her second double-double on the season with ten kills and ten digs.
As a team, Providence registered 59 kills on 185 total attacks, 85 digs, 57 assists and eight total team blocks.
WHAT'S NEXT:The Friars return to Alumni Hall to open up BIG EAST play next weekend. Providence will welcome Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 27 at 6:00 p.m. and finish the weekend against Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1:00 p.m.
