Volleyball Set To Begin BIG EAST Competition

The Friars will play Georgetown and Villanova in the opening weekend.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team has concluded its non-conference schedule and will now begin BIG EAST competition. The Friars will take on the Hoyas from Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 27 at 6:00 p.m. and the Wildcats from Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1:00 p.m. Providence finished their non-conference schedule with a 5-8 record. The Friars look to improve upon a 2-16 conference record last season.
 
SCOUTING THE FRIARS: The Friars have received some significant contributions from newcomers, Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.), Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Natalie Benson (Bourbonnais, Ill.). Benson earned 2019 Dog Pound Challenge All-Tournament honors last weekend and 15th Annual Friar Volleyball Classic All-Tournament honors. Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) also earned 15th Annual Friar Volleyball Classic All-Tournament honors also.
 
Leitman leads the Friars with 137 kills on 393 total attacks. The freshman currently ranks fifth in kills per set (3.34) and points per set (3.77) in the BIG EAST.
 
Alderson holds a team-high .316 hitting percentage which is seventh in the BIG EAST.
 
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) has team-highs 453 assists and 147 digs on the season. The junior ranks fourth in assists per sets (9.44) in the conference and has tallied 11 double-doubles in 13 matches.
 
 
SCOUTING THE HOYAS: Georgetown concluded its non-conference schedule with a 10-4 record and is on a seven-match win streak. Last weekend, the Hoyas went 4-0, claiming the 2019 Hoya Invitational Championship over Morgan State, Binghamton and FIU. The Hoyas finished the weekend with a victory over Howard in straight sets. The Hoyas were picked sixth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. Iva Vujosevic has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times on the season.
 
Vujosevic has registered a team-high 172 kills on 470 total attacks and second on the team in digs (140). In the BIG EAST, Vujosevic ranks first in service aces per set (0.53), second in total points (201.5), points per set (4.29) and fourth in kills per set (3.66).
 
Emma Plutnicki leads the Hoyas with 401 assists and ranks sixth in the BIG EAST for assists per set (8.35).
 
Jessica Cusi has recorded a team-high 176 digs and ranks tenth in the BIG EAST in digs per set (3.45).
 
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS: Villanova finished its non-conference schedule with a 9-2 record, most recently defeating Temple and Delaware. The Wildcats defeated a common opponent with the Friars, Bryant, in straight sets. Villanova was ranked fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 
Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Regan Lough leads the Wildcats with 193 digs and ranks second in the BIG EAST in digs per set (5.08). Lough has been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll twice this season.
 
Mallory Potts holds a team-high 93 kills, and is ranked third in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage (.365) and sixth in kills per set (3.21). Fellow Wildcat, Allie Olsonoski ranks third on the team with 76 kills and fourth in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage (.360).
 
Emma Decker ranks second in the BIG EAST in assists per sets (10.41) and has tallied a team-high 354 assists. 
 
Sanaa Barnes, who ranks second on the team in kills (88) has been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll once this season.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars hit the road to take on Seton Hall and St. Johns. Providence will play the Pirates on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. and the Red Storm on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
