PROVIDENCE, R.I.-The Providence College volleyball team fell to the Brown Bears in five sets, 21-25, 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 11-15 to conclude the 15
thAnnual Friar Volleyball Classic. Brown won the tournament and improved to 7-1. The Friars fell to 5-5 on the season.
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS-The Friars were leading 7-6 before the Bears went on a 5-0 run to take the lead. Brown kept the lead throughout the remainder of the tightly contested set to win, 25-23.
Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) led the Friars with four kills on six total attacks with a .667 hitting percentage.
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) had a set-high 11 assists.
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) recorded six digs.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS- Providence jumped to an early 7-3 lead in the set. After the score was all tied up at 14, the Friars went on a 6-1 run to create some separation in the set. The Friars never looked back and went on to win the set, 25-22.
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) and Root led the Friars with three kills, respectively.
Barber registered seven assists and six digs.
Taylor had a set-high seven digs.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS- After Brown took its only lead at 1-0, the Friars rattled off five straight points and did not look back. The Friars led the rest of the set and won 25-18.
Nelson recorded a set-high six kills on 16 total attacks.
Barber tallied all of the Friars' assists (13).
Natalie Benson (Bradley, Ill.) had a team-high six digs.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS- The set went back and forth before Brown eventually claimed the set, 25-23.
Nelson registered six kills on 14 total attacks.
Barber recorded 13 assists.
Taylor had a team-high five digs.
FIFTH SET HIGHLIGHTS- The set was all tied at five before Brown took an 8-6 lead into the switch. Providence went on a 3-1 run to tie it at nine. Brown went on a 4-1 run to take the lead, 13-11. Brown went on to win the set, 15-11.
Root recorded four kills on nine total attacks.
Barber had six assists.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS-
Barber recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 50 assists and 12 digs.
Root tallied her first double-double of the season with 18 kills and 12 digs.
Nelson tied Root with a team-high 18 kills.
The Friars had four players with double-digit digs. Taylor led Providence with 19.
As a team, the Friars recorded 58 kills on 179 total attacks, 53 assists and 83 digs.
Alderson and Benson were named to the All-Tournament team.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will head to Storrs, Conn. on Sept. 20-21 for the 2019 Dog Pound Challenge at UConn. The Friars will play one match Friday, Sept. 20 at 12:00 against Dartmouth. Providence will finish the tournament on Sept. 21 with matches against Holy Cross at 12:30 p.m. and UConn at 6:00 p.m.
