STORRS, CONN. – The Providence College volleyball team fell to Dartmouth in straight sets (16-25, 15-25, 21-25) to open the 2019 Dog Pound Challenge in Storrs, Conn. on Sept. 20.
FIRST SET:
• Dartmouth won the first set, 25-16.
• The Big Green got out to a 10-2 lead early on in the action.
• Providence cut the deficit to four (14-10), winning eight of the next 12 points.
• Freshman
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) led the Friars with three kills in the first set.
SECOND SET:
• Providence earned the first point of the second set before Dartmouth went on an 8-0 run.
• The Friars got as close as seven (16-9), but Dartmouth retained momentum for a 25-15 victory.
THIRD SET:
• Leitman gave the Friars a 4-3 lead in the third set, with her team-leading sixth kill of the match.
• The Big Green followed with four-consecutive points to take a 7-4 advantage and held on to their momentum to gain a 10-6 advantage on the scoreboard.
• The Friars won eight of the next 12 points to tie the match, 14-14. During the run, the two teams were deadlocked at 12-12, 13-13 and 14-14.
• Dartmouth rallied to take an 18-15 lead to force a Providence College timeout. Dartmouth extended its lead to 21-15 out of the break.
• Providence scored four of the next five points to get within three at 22-19.
• As the match continued the Friars were still within striking distance at 24-21, forcing a Dartmouth timeout.
• Dartmouth held on for a 25-21 victory in the set to win the match in straight-sets.
MATCH NOTES:
• Leitman led the Friars with 10 kills, followed by eight kills from
Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.).
• Nelson also provided two of the Friars' three service aces on the day.
•
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) recorded a double-double with a team-best 28 assists and 12 digs.
• Barber has nine double-doubles in 10 matches this season.
WHAT'S NEXT:
The Providence College volleyball team returns to action for the second day of the 2019 Dog Pound Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 21. The Friars will face Holy Cross at 12:30 p.m. and complete the tournament with a match against UConn at 6:00 p.m.
