Volleyball Heads To UConn for 2019 Dog Pound Challenge

The Friars will play three matches over two days against Dartmouth, Holy Cross and UConn.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team will travel to Storrs, Conn. for the 2019 Dog Pound Challenge on Sept. 20-21. The Friars will take on Dartmouth on Friday, Sept. 20 at 12:00 p.m. Providence will conclude the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 21 with matches against Holy Cross at 12:30 p.m. and UConn at 6:00 p.m.
 
SCOUTING THE FRIARS: The Friars enter the tournament 5-5 after going 2-1 as host of the 15thAnnual Friar Volleyball Classic last weekend. Providence defeated Fairleigh Dickinson in straight sets and Coppin State in four sets. The Friars fell to in-state rival Brown in five sets in their tournament finale. Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Natalie Benson (Bradley, Ill.) earned All-Tournament honors.
 
Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) leads the Friars with 100 kills on 276 total attacks. The freshman is ranked fourth in the BIG EAST in points per set (4.00) and fifth in kills per set (3.57).
 
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) has recorded eight double-doubles in 10 games. The junior leads the Friars in assists (333) and is second in digs (104). Barber is ranked third in the BIG EAST in service aces per set (.34) and fourth in assists per set (9.51).
 
Caroline LaMacchia (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) has registered a team-high 105 digs.
 
Alderson currently ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage (.344).
 
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN: Dartmouth travels to Storrs, Conn. with a record of 2-4. In the Dartmouth Invitational last weekend, the Big Green went 0-3, falling to Hofstra, Hartford, and Fordham.
 
Freshman Grace Wiczek leads the Big Green in kills (61).
 
Freshman Makenzie Avert is averaging 9.00 assists per set and has totaled 171 assists overall. She is second on the team in digs (73). Avert earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Sept. 9.
 
Sophomore Bella Hedley has registered a team-high 79 digs.
 
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS: Holy Cross comes into the Dog Pound Challenge with a 2-9 record. In its most recent match, they defeated Hartford in straight sets.
 
Junior Rachel Harding leads the Crusaders with 92 kills on 317 total attacks and is second on the team in digs (113).
 
Junior Shannon Dwyer has tallied a team-high 162 assists and 4.91 assists per set.
 
Junior Sophie VanSeveren has recorded a team-high 147 digs and 3.97 digs per set.
 
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: UConn enters this weekend with a 3-6 record after dropping all three matches this past weekend at the Ohio Invite. The Huskies lost to the University of Virginia, Ohio University and College of Charleston in straight sets.
 
Preseason American Athletic Conference selection sophomore Caylee Parker leads the Huskies in kills (99) and kills per set (3.67). Parker is second on the team in digs (71).
 
Redshirt sophomore Courtney Morris has a team-high 207 assists.
 
Freshman Aset Baker-Falealili has tallied 72 digs.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will begin their BIG EAST campaign on Friday, Sept. 27 as they host Georgetown at 6:00 p.m. Providence will play Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1:00 p.m.
