Boyce leaves his mark at Providence College as the most decorated player in program history.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– On May 13, Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) officially signed a contract to play professional lacrosse with the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) as the organization begins training camp.  This weekend, he closes a storied chapter of his career at the NCAA Division I college level as he crosses the stage at the Dunkin' Donuts Center to receive his diploma from Providence College.

Boyce, a goalkeeper, leaves Providence College as the most decorated player in program history and set a standard that should serve future Friar lacrosse players well in their collegiate careers and beyond.

"Tate's impact on the Providence College lacrosse program has been immeasurable," Head Coach Chris Gabrielli said. "His legacy will be that of a relentless pursuit of excellence for himself, his teammates and the program. Tate served as our model for effective leadership and was a respected three-year team captain. He led by example, but also was demanding of his teammates and coaches.  Tate did not rely simply on his talent, and always searched for ways to improve himself and the team.  He transformed his body to maximize his athleticism, devoured game and practice film and used every resource that the Providence College Athletic Department offered to get the most out of his body and mind."

During his career with the Friars Boyce was a four-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection and two-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year.  He is the only player in program history to earn All-Conference First Team recognition each year of his four-year career.  He also is the first player to earn Goalkeeper of the Year recognition in multiple seasons.

Boyce also is the first player in program history to be named to the Tewaaraton Watch List and was featured among the nation's top lacrosse players on the list in back-to-back seasons (2018 and 2019). Additionally, he is one of four players in program history to earn USILA Division I All-America honors as a member of the Third Team in 2017.

"Tate thrived in adverse conditions, playing his best in the big games, and in big moments, wanting to be a difference maker," Gabrielli said. "He never made excuses, and was the first to demand more of himself. Tate's No. 1 goal was to leave this program better than he found it, by being the best version of himself and demanding that everyone around him do the same, including the coaches.  He certainly has achieved that goal, while rewriting the record books and leaving a lasting impression on the program."

Boyce helped guide the Friars to their first appearance in the BIG EAST Men's Lacrosse Tournament as the team's starting goalkeeper as a freshman in 2016.  He led Providence to three tournament appearances overall, including a trip to the BIG EAST Championship Game in 2017.  That year, Providence also made its first-ever appearance in the national polls.

Statistically, he finished his impressive career having appeared in 64 games and logged a total of 3,782 minutes.  He registered a 9.60 goals against average and a 0.545 save percentage, while holding 33 of his 64 opponents to single-digit goals. Additionally, he collected a program-record 725 saves during his career, which also ranks first among active NCAA Division I goalkeepers.

Boyce, also excels in the classroom, having earned BIG EAST All-Academic Team honors three times.  Perhaps the honor that best defines him is his selection as a finalist for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate lacrosse.  To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in the four domains of community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS award focuses on the total student-athlete.

In addition to continuing his lacrosse career with the Boston Cannons, Boyce will pursue a Masters of Business Administration at Providence College, beginning in the fall of 2019. During that time, he also will remain with the lacrosse program as a graduate assistant.

"We wish Tate well this summer as he begins what is sure to be a long and successful professional lacrosse career," Gabrielli said. "However, we are grateful that he will remain in Friartown as our Graduate Assistant Coach, while pursuing his MBA from the The School of Business here at Providence College."
