PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The freshman duo of
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif) and
Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) swept the BIG EAST Weekly Awards on Monday, April 1 amidst a 5-0 week for the Friars. Alvarez earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week while Tomaso was recognized as the BIG EAST Player of the Week. This marked Alvarez's second appearance as the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week as she won the award on March 11, and Tomaso's first appearance in the BIG EAST Weekly Awards.
Alvarez was dominant in the circle, earning three of her 11 wins on the season, ranking her second in the BIG EAST in the win column. Her most notable performance of the week came on Saturday, March 30 when she pitched a 12-inning complete game in a 4-3 win over Creighton, allowing just three earned runs while striking out eight batters in the process. She made four appearances, picking up three wins and one save. Alvarez recorded a 1.83 ERA on the week in 23.0 innings of work, she struck out 19 batters compared to just four walks. She ranks first in the BIG EAST in ERA (2.00) and third in strikeouts (82) and opposing batting average (.226). Alvarez eclipsed pitching over 100 innings this season, with an astounding 82 strikeouts compared to just 17 walks.
Tomaso was the hero for Providence this week, tallying two walk-off hits out of the team's five wins. Her first walk-off hit came in a tie game, 3-3, against Rhode Island on Wednesday, March 27. Tomaso roped a walk-off hit to left center field that allowed
Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) to score from first base. Tomaso continued her late game heroics against Creighton on Saturday, March 30. The bases were loaded in the bottom of the seventh, trailing 3-1, when Tomaso sent a ball over the left field fence for a walk-off grand slam to earn the 5-3 win. Tomaso recorded a .412 batting average this week, going 7-17 at the plate while tallying a team-high seven RBI. She now holds the third-best batting average on the team (.297) and is tied for first in home runs (three) with
Hadley Tate (Yarmouthport, Mass.).
The Friars will return to the field on Wednesday, April 3 when they travel to Brown University for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.
