Women's Basketball Game Notes vs. Penn - WNIT Second Round

FRIARS SET TO HOST PENN FOR ROUND 2 OF THE WOMEN'S NATIONAL INVITATION TOURNAMENT... The Providence College women's basketball team will host Penn in Round 2 of the Women's National Invitation Tournament on Sunday, March 24. The game will be played at Alumni Hall / Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to tip-off at 4:00 p.m.

FRIARS ALL-TIME IN THE WNIT... Providence is in the midst of its second appearance in the WNIT in program history. The Friars also earned a spot in the WNIT in 2010 and posted a 3-1 record. Providence defeated Boston University (64-58), Old Dominion (76-61) and Maryland (77-64) before falling to Miami (73-65) in the Quarterfinal Round. This season, Providence opened the WNIT with a 71-54 victory against Hartford on March 21 in Providence, R.I.

PROVIDENCE VS. PENN ALL-TIME... Sunday's game will mark the first meeting all-time between Providence and Penn in women's basketball.

COMMON OPPONENTS... The Friars and Quakers have played three common opponents this season in Yale, La Salle and Villanova. Providence posted a 3-1 record vs. the trio of teams, including a season-series split with Villanova. Penn also compiled a 4-1 record vs. those opponents, with its only loss coming against Villanova, and the Quakers picked up two victories in the season series vs. Yale.

PENN ADVANCES TO ROUND 2 WITH VICTORY OVER AMERICAN... The Penn Quakers defeated American, 64-45, in Round 1 of the WNIT on Friday, March 22 at The Palestra in Philadelphia, Pa. Eleah Parker posted a double-double with 16 points and 17 rebounds. Ashley Russell led all scorers with 18 points, while Phoebe Sterba notched 16 points and six boards. Kendall Grasela dished a game-high seven assists. The Quakers shot 41.5-percent from the floor (22-53), including a 42.9-percent clip from three-point territory. Penn also hit 11-13 shots from the foul line (.846). The Quakers dominated the glass with a 42-28 rebounding margin.

SCOUTING PENN... Penn enters Sunday's game at Providence with a 24-6 overall record, and shared the Ivy League Regular-Season title with Princeton as both squads finished league play with a 12-2 mark. The Quakers entered the Ivy League Tournament (Ivy Madness) as the No. 2 seed and fell in the championship game to Princeton, 65-54, in New Haven, Conn. Eleah Parker and Ashley Russell were named to the All-Tournament Team. Parker, who averages 15.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.1 blocked shots per game, is a unanimous First-Team All-Ivy selection and also was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year. Russell and Princess Aghayere were selected to the All-Ivy Second Team. Russell averages 10.8 points, 6.4 boards and a team-best 4.3 assists per contest, while Aghayere checks in with 11.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. The Quakers are ranked 57th in the NCAA RPI, which includes games played through March 17.

BASKERVILLE AND NOGIC EXPLODE FOR 49 POINTS IN WNIT WIN OVER HARTFORD... Senior guard Jovana Nogic and freshman Mary Baskerville combined for 49 of the Friars' 71 points in a 71-54 victory over Hartford in Round 1 of the WNIT on March 21 in Providence, R.I. Nogic's 27 points marked a season-high, as she hit 10-12 shots from the field and went 7-9 from beyond the arc. Baskerville's 22 points marked a career-high, as she eclipsed the 20-point mark for the first time as a Friar. She also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds. Providence shot an impressive 58.3-percent from the field, including a 55-percent clip from three-point land (11-20).

ROOKIE KAELA WEBB THRIVING IN POST-SEASON PLAY... Freshman guard Kaela Webb has been impressive in three post-season games for Providence, including two games in the BIG EAST Tournament and PC's WNIT victory over Hartford. In the BIG EAST Tournament, she was one of two players on the roster to reach double figures in both game, scoring 13 against Xavier and 10 vs. DePaul. On March 21 vs. Hartford, Webb tallied nine points, four assists and recored career highs in rebounds (six) and steals (four). In the last three games, she has averaged 10.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

FRIARS MAKE FIRST POST-SEASON APPEARANCE SINCE 2010... The Friars' WNIT selection marks the program's 15th post-season appearance overall and first since 2010. The team has been invited to the WNIT, twice, in addition to making five NCAA appearances, one National Women's Invitational Tournament appearance and seven EAIAW Tournaments. HEAD COACH JIM CROWLEY IN POST-SEASON PLAY... Jim Crowley has guided the Friars to their first post-season appearance since 2010, in just his third season as Providence's head coach. Providence defeated Hartford in the first round of the WNIT on March 21, 2019 in Providence, R.I. Prior to his arrival on Smith Hill, Crowley led St. Bonaventure to four WNIT appearances and two NCAA Tournament berths. Crowley is 9-6 all-time in post-season play, including a 6-4 mark in the WNIT. Crowley is 1-0 in the postseason as head coach at Providence College.

FRIARS ALL-TIME IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT... Providence College posted a 1-1 mark in the BIG EAST Tournament this season, bowing out in the Quarterfinals to eventual champion DePaul, 85-60. The Friars are 20-31 (.392) all-time in BIG EAST Tournament games.

PROVIDENCE RANKS 13TH IN THE NCAA IN THREE-POINT PERCENTAGE... Providence College leads the BIG EAST and ranks 13th among NCAA Division I programs in three-point field-goal percentage. Providence has hit 37.5-percent of its attempts from long range this season (211-563).

AMONG THE PROGRAM'S BEST FROM THE ARC... The Friars' current three-point percentage (.375) is the second-best for a single-season in program history. A season ago (2017-18), Providence shot a program-record .391 from beyond the arc. In 2016-17, the Friars posted what currently ranks as the third-highest percentage in program history (.374).

THREE HEADED MONSTER... The Friars' senior class of Jovana Nogic, Maddie Jolin and Clara Che have been lethal from three-point land over the last four seasons for Providence. The trio has combined to hit an impressive 619-1561 triples, falling just shy of 40-percent (.397).

211 AND COUNTING... The Friars' 211 three-point field goals this season are the second-most during a single-season in program history. Providence hit 192 triples in each of the previous two season, which is good for fourth all-time. A list of the top-six three-point performances for a single-season at Providence is below:

FRIARS IMPROVE TO 6-1 WHEN HITTING 10+ THREE-POINTERS... Providence has hit double-digits threes in seven games this season and have posted a 6-1 record. Providence opened the 2019 WNIT hitting 11-20 attempts from beyond the arc (.550). Additionally, it marked Providence's second-highest three-point percentage of the season when hitting 10-or-more threes. The Friars' only loss this season when hitting 10+ triples came against Rhode Island (72-65).

MARY BASKERVILLE RANKS NO. 1 ALL-TIME IN FIELD-GOAL PERCENTAGE FOR A SINGLE SEASON... Freshman Mary Baskerville leads the Friars this season in field-goal percentage, having converted 131-222 shot attempts at a 59-percent clip. With still more basketball to be played, it marks the highest field-goal percentage for a single-season in program history. Elizabeth Lawlor '88 set the single-season record during the 1982-83 season with a shooting percentage of .581. The highest single-season field-goal percentage by a freshman prior to this season was held by Andrea Mangum (.561).

MARY BASKERVILLE LEAVING HER MARK IN THE PROVIDENCE COLLEGE RECORD BOOKS... Mary Baskerville has set the Providence College record for blocked shots by a freshman, with 49, and counting. Her 49 rejections also are the most by a Friar in a single-season since the 1999-00 campaign, when Monika Roberts '01 swatted 57 shots.

OLIVIA ORLANDO HAS CAREER NIGHT IN WIN OVER XAVIER... Sophomore Olivia Orlando netted a career-high 18 points in the Friars' BIG EAST Tournament First Round win against Xavier on March 9. One of her two misses from the field came on a half-court heave to end the first half, as she finished the game 9-11 from the floor. Orlando also hauled in a team-high eight rebounds and dished three assists. Additionally, her 18 points marked just fourth double-digit scoring game of her career.

FRIARS DISH 20 ASSISTS IN EACH OF ITS LAST THREE GAMES... Providence has dished 20+ assists in each of its last three games, including a season-high 23 handouts vs. Hartford in the first round of the WNIT on March 21. Prior to facing Hartford in the post-season, the Friars dished 20 assists in each of its BIG EAST Tournament games vs. Xavier (Mar. 9) and DePaul (Mar. 10).

BALL SECURITY... Providence turned the ball over just eight times in its BIG EAST Tournament First Round victory over Xavier. It marked the second fewest turnovers of the season for the Friars, and they move to 2-0 on the season when keeping their turnovers to single-digits. Providence defeated Creighton, 77-63, on Jan. 26 and logged just five turnovers in that game.

MARY BASKERVILLE NAMED BIG EAST FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR... Mary Baskerville, a five-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week selection, became just the second Friar all-time to earn Freshman of the Year honors. Former Friar great Tracy Lis '92 was tabbed BIG EAST Rookie of the Year 30 years ago at the conclusion of the 1988-89 season. In addition to Freshman of the Year recognition, Baskerville also earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team as one of two unanimous selections. She finished the regular-season ranked first among freshmen in the BIG EAST Conference in nine statistical categories, including scoring (8.7 ppg), rebounding (7.1 rpg), field-goal percentage (.570, 110-193), blocked shots (1.5 bpg), offensive rebounds (2.0 orpg), defensive rebounds (5.1 drpg), double-doubles (five), double-digit scoring games (14) and double-digit rebounding games (six). Baskerville improved her scoring (9.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg) averages during BIG EAST play, while shooting an impressive .602 from the field (74-123).

JOVANA NOGIC NAMED ALL-BIG EAST HONORABLE MENTION... Senior Jovana Nogic earned All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention accolades for the second time in her career (2017, 2019). She leads the Friars in scoring (13.7 ppg) and also contributes 3.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game. Nogic has hit double figures in the scoring column in 23 of 33 games this season, and owns 83 double-digit games in her career. She has established Providence College records for three-point field goals in a season (91 in 2016-17) and career three-pointers, with 318 and counting. Nogic also ranks third all-time in the BIG EAST in career three-point field goals during regular-season conference action. Nogic entered the year as a Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selection, and also was featured on the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List for the second-straight season. The Ann Meyers Drysdale Award is given annually to the nation's top shooting guard.

KAELA WEBB JOINS MARY BASKERVILLE AS TWO OF FIVE PLAYERS NAMED TO THE BIG EAST ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM... Kaela Webb joined classmate Mary Baskerville on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. Webb has recorded nine double-digit scoring games on the year, including both of the Friars' BIG EAST Tournament games. Through 32 games, Webb is averaging 8.0 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game. It marks just the second time in program history that Providence has had two players featured on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. Former Friars Jennifer Mead '94 and Lucie Fontanella '94 each made the squad in 1991. Webb and Baskerville are among the list of 20 players in program history to have earned All-Freshman Team recognition. The first came in 1984: current ESPN and NBA analyst Doris (Sable) Burke '87.

MOST WINS IN BIG EAST PLAY SINCE 1996-97... The Friars completed the regular-season schedule with an 8-10 mark in the BIG EAST Conference and finished in tie for sixth place in the league standings. The Friars' eight wins are the most in conference play since 1996-97, when that team also finished with an 8-10 mark. It marks just the fourth time in the last 20 years that the Friars have recorded six or more victories in league play.

FRIARS PICK UP 18TH WIN OVERALL... Providence owns 18 victories on the year and has surpassed its win total from a season ago when the squad finished 10-21 (+8). Providence's 18 victories are the most in a single season since finishing 19-15 in 2009-10.

10-POINTS OR LESS... Nineteen (19) of the Friars' 33 games have been decided by 10-points or less. Providence has posted an 11-8 record in those games, including a 4-4 mark in games decided by five-points or less. Additionally, 10 of the Friars' 18 BIG EAST regular-season games were decided by 10-points. Providence compiled a 6-4 record in those games, including a 3-0 mark in overtime.

SINGLE-DIGITS... Eight of the Friars' 15 losses this season have been decided by single-digits. Four of the single-digit losses came during non-conference play. Providence suffered single-digit losses in BIG EAST Conference action against Seton Hall (79-73) on Jan. 13, Georgetown (61-56) on Feb. 3, St. John's (60-57) on Feb. 10 and Creighton (74-63) on Feb. 23.

MADDIE JOLIN FILLS THE STAT SHEET... Maddie Jolin is one of seven active players in the BIG EAST Conference with more than 1,000 points, 400 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals, joining: Allazia Blockton (Marquette), Danielle King (Marquette), Natisha Hiedeman (Marquette), Amani Wilborn (Marquette), Dionna White (Georgetown) and Tori Schickel (Butler). Jolin has played 31 of the Friars' 33 games this season and is averaging 10.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

JOVANA NOGIC RANKS FOURTH ALL-TIME IN SCORING AT PROVIDENCE... Jovana Nogic owns 1,693 career points (13.8 ppg) and ranks fourth on the Friars' all-time career scoring list. Since the start of the season, she has jumped 14 spots on the list. She is 103 points shy of taking sole possession of third place, currently held by Chelsea Marandola '10 (1,795).

MADDIE JOLIN HITS THE 1,000-POINT MILESTONE... Maddie Jolin became the 35th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone on Feb. 15 vs. Xavier. She hit the mark with 13-seconds left in the third quarter on a free throw. She has totaled 1,086 points in her career and ranks 27th all-time in scoring at Providence.

NOGIC COMPLETES REGULAR SEASON RANKED THIRD ALL-TIME IN THE BIG EAST IN CAREER THREE-POINT FIELD GOALS ... Jovana Nogic completed the regular season ranked third all-time in career three-point field goals during BIG EAST regular-season play, with 167. A trio of seniors, including Nogic, were in hot pursuit of the all-time record. Villanova's Adrianna Hahn set the league mark with 169 triples, while Marquette's Natisha Hiedeman finished sixth all-time (158). Providence and Villanova are the only schools to have two players ranked in the top-10 on the list.

HITTING THE GLASS... Providence owns an 12-1 record this season when they out-rebound or post the same number of rebounds as their opponents. The Friars suffered their first loss on March 1 vs. DePaul, after completing the game with a 31-30 advantage on the glass. Most recently, Providence out-rebounded Hartford, 37-24, in the first round of the WNIT (March 21).

SHARING THE SPOTLIGHT ON OFFENSE... The Friars have had seven different players lead the team in scoring through 33 games, including three freshmen. Senior Jovana Nogic has paced the Friars' offense in a team-best 18 games. Senior Maddie Jolin (six), sophomore Chanell Williams (five) and freshmen Mary Baskerville (four), Alyssa Geary (one), Kaela Webb (one) and Olivia Orlando (1) have each led Providence in the scoring column.

NOGIC RANKS AMONG NCAA ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS FROM BEYOND THE ARC... Jovana Nogic ranks among NCAA career leaders in multiple categories. She ranks 14th among active NCAA Division I players in career three-point percentage (.408, 318-779). Additionally, she ranked 22nd among active NCAA career leaders in three-pointers made per game (2.59) and 10th in three-point field goals made (318).

MARY BASKERVILLE LEADS FRIARS WITH FIVE DOUBLE-DOUBLES... Freshman Mary Baskerville leads the Friars with five double-doubles this season, including four during BIG EAST regular-season play. She recorded her first career double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds against La Salle. In league action, she has recorded double-doubles against St. John's, twice, (14pts/10rebs and 11pts/11rebs), Georgetown (10pts/15rebs) and Seton Hall (14pts/14rebs).

DEFENSE... Providence has held 17 opponents below 40-percent shooting from the field this season and have posted a 13-4 mark in those games. Furthermore, the Friars are 8-2 when holding their opponents to below 35-percent, including a 4-1 mark against teams they held to 30-percent or lower. The Friars' only loss in this scenario came against Quinnipiac (48-44) after holding the Bobcats to 27.9-percent from the floor (17-61). In the Friars' first round WNIT game, the team held Hartford to 34.5-percent shooting (19-55) in a 71-54 victory.

20-POINT PLATEAU... Three Friars have scored 20+ points in a game this season. Jovana Nogic has hit the mark eight times: vs. Rhode Island (20), Bryant (22), Pepperdine (22), Villanova (23), Butler (24), Xavier (22), Butler (20) and Hartford (27). Nogic has scored 20+ points in 26 games during her career, including a career-best 31 points against Northeastern last season. Chanell Williams posted a career-high 25 points against Sacred Heart, marking the first 20+ point game of her career. She also hit for 20 points against Northeastern on Dec. 15. Maddie Jolin became the third Friar to reach the 20-point mark, as she knocked down 20 points in the Friars' victory over #RV/RV Butler (74-68, 3OT). She eclipsed the mark a second time this season with a career-high 25 points against Seton Hall (Feb. 8).

FRIARS IN OVERTIME GAMES UNDER JIM CROWLEY... Providence is 5-4 in overtime games under the direction of third-year Friars Head Coach Jim Crowley, including a 3-0 mark in 2018-19. The Friars are 2-0 in overtime games when they score 90+ points, and 3-3 vs. BIG EAST opponents.

40+ REBOUNDS... Providence has recorded 40+ rebounds in seven games this season and have posted a 6-1 record in those games. It marks the most 40+ rebound games in a single season since 2014-15. During that campaign, the Friars collected 40+ rebounds in 13 games.

JOVANA NOGIC SETS ALL-TIME THREE-POINT RECORD AT PROVIDENCE COLLEGE... Jovana Nogic set the Providence College career three-point field goal record on Dec. 8 at UMass Lowell. The previous mark was held by Julie Wheeler '98, with 252, in 101 games (1994-98). Nogic cleared that record on her second three-point bucket of the game against the River Hawks, with 7:51 remaining in the third quarter. Nogic currently has 318 three-pointers in her career.

NOGIC HOLDS FRIARS' SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR THREE-POINTERS... Jovana Nogic set the Providence College single-season record for three-pointers, with 91, during the 2016-17 season. The previous record was held by Julie Wheeler '98, which she set during the 1994-95 season, with 82.

FRIARS RECORD DOUBLE-DIGITS IN THE WIN COLUMN IN THREE-STRAIGHT SEASONS... The Friars head into the second round of the WNIT with an 18-15 overall record. It marks the third-straight season that the Friars have recorded double-digits wins. The Friars' three-straight seasons with double-digit wins are the most since recording 10-or-more wins in six-straight seasons from 2006-07 to 2011-12.

FRIARS EARN FIRST WEEKEND SWEEP ON THE ROAD SINCE CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT... Providence earned its first weekend road sweep since BIG EAST realignment with back-to-back wins over Xavier (63-55) on Feb. 15 and Butler (66-63, OT) on Feb. 17.

FIRST CONSECUTIVE ROAD WINS IN CONFERENCE PLAY SINCE 1996-97... The Friars claimed back-to-back victories on the road vs. Xavier (63-55) and Butler (66-63, OT). It marks the first time since the 1996-97 season that the Friars have won consecutive road games in conference play. That season, Providence earned back-to-back road wins against Pittsburgh (78-65) and Syracuse (87-85, OT).

FRIARS FINISHED REGULAR-SEASON NON-CONFERENCE ACTION BY WINNING EIGHT OF LAST 10 GAMES... Providence College started the season with an 0-2 record, losing to Penn State (74-72) and Quinnipiac (48-44) by a combined total of six points. The Friars finished regular-season non-conference play by winning eight of their last 10 games. Their only losses in the span came to in-state rival Rhode Island, 72-65, in the opening game of the 3rd Annual Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament. Providence also fell to Northeastern, 65-59.

PERFECTION... Jovana Nogic and Maddie Jolin have shown her brilliance from the free throw line this season, with each going perfect from the line with more than 10 attempts. Nogic was 11-11 from the free throw line against Villanova on Jan. 6. She went on to hit 12-12 attempts from the line against #RV/RV Butler on Jan. 18. On Feb. 8, Jolin hit 10-10 attempts from the stripe. They are two of nine players in program history to go perfect from the line in a single game with 10-or-more attempts. JOVANA NOGIC BEGAN SEASON ON ANN MEYERS DRYSDALE AWARD WATCH LIST... On Oct. 23, it was announced that Jovana Nogic was named to the 20-player watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, which is presented annually to the top shooting guard in NCAA Division I. It marks the second-straight season that Nogic has been featured on the watch list. Nogic was not selected to advance to the final list of 10 players.

JOVANA NOGIC FEATURED ON 11-PLAYER PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM... Jovana Nogic was named to the 2018-19 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Oct. 25 at the league's annual media day at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Nogic is one of 11 players to earn preseason recognition. It marks the second-straight year that she has earned Preseason All-BIG EAST honors. Nogic was named an All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention honoree at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season.

TWO FRIARS EARN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK IN THE SAME SEASON... Forward Mary Baskerville and guard Kaela Webb have each been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week this season. It marks the first time since 2000-01 that two different Friar rookies have earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors in the same season. Baskerville earned the honor a program-best five times (Dec. 24, Jan. 7, Jan. 14, Feb. 11, Mar. 4), while Webb nabbed the accolade for the first time in her career on Jan. 21.

FRIARS WIN THREE-STRAIGHT IN BIG EAST REGULAR-SEASON PLAY FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2001-02 SEASON... Earlier this season the Friars were on a three-game win streak in BIG EAST play, having defeated #RV/RV Butler (74-68, 3OT), Xavier (71-58) and Creighton (77-63). It marked the first time since the 2001-02 season that the Friars had won three-straight games in league play.

FRIARS IN TRIPLE OVERTIME... The Friars posted a triple-overtime victory against #RV/RV Butler (74-68) in Providence, R.I. on Jan. 18. The last time Providence played a triple overtime game dates back to Nov. 27, 2010 vs. Alabama (L, 82-80).

FOURTH TRIPLE OVERTIME GAME IN BIG EAST WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HISTORY... On Jan. 18, Providence and Butler played just the fourth triple overtime game in BIG EAST women's basketball history.

Mar. 2, 2013 - Villanova defeated Syracuse, 77-75 (3OT)

Mar. 4, 2013 - Notre Dame defeated Connecticut, 96-87 (3OT)

Jan. 18, 2019 - Providence defeated Butler, 74-68 (3OT)

LOOKING BACK AT 2017-18 SEASON... The Friars finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 10-21 overall record and a 3-15 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence fell to Butler in overtime, 73-67, in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round, held at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill.

EXCEEDING EXPECTATION... Heading into the 2018-19 campaign, Providence was picked to finish ninth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Friars went on to finish with an 8-10 mark and found themselves in a tie for sixth in the final standings. The Friars entered the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 7 seed, marking its highest seed since 1996. Additionally, Providence is heading to the second round of the Postseason WNIT, marking their first post-season appearance since 2010.

WHAT'S NEXT... The winner of Sunday's WNIT game between Providence and Penn will advance to Round 3 to face the winner of Georgetown/Harvard. The Hoyas and Crimson are scheduled to tip-off at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 24 in Cambridge, Mass. Location and game times will be released Sunday evening.
