PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team improved to 7-5 on the season with a 63-51 victory over Stonehill College (3-5) on Dec. 13 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Freshman
Ashley Dinges scored a career-high 13 points and matched her career-high with nine boards. Classmate
Riley Hamburger added a career-high 10 points on the strength of 8-8 shooting from the foul line.
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence led 8-2 before Stonehill tied the game on a 6-0 spurt with 4:49 to play.
• The Friars led 12-11 at the intermission despite Stonehill's field-goal drought of 8:57.
• Providence's defense held Stonehill to 1-13 from the field, but the Skyhawks kept it close with a 9-10 shooting performance at the foul line.
• The Friars shot 29-percent from the field in the opening 10 minutes (5-17) and 2-2 from the free-throw line.
2ND QUARTER:
• Stonehill took its first lead of the game (17-14) on a three-pointer from the right wing at the 7:01 mark.
•
Payton Dunbar answered with a three of her own on Providence's next possession.
• Dunbar's triple sparked a 10-0 run to give Providence a 24-17 lead with 4:49 on the clock.
• Providence outscored Stonehill 14-3 over the final 6:41 of the quarter to take a 28-20 lead at halftime.
• The Friars dominated the paint with an 18-2 scoring advantage.
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence used a 9-0 spurt during a span of 2:51 to claim its largest lead of the afternoon (41-27) with 2:32 on the clock.
• Stonehill halted the run with five-straight points by Ella Pelletier (41-32).
• The Friars carried a 43-32 lead into the fourth quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• Stonehill used an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to three (50-47) with 3:45 remaining in the game.
• Dinges halted the run with a step-back jumper, but the Skyhawks answered with another three to make it a two-point game with 2:58 on the clock (52-50).
• From there, the Friars closed out the game with an 11-1 scoring advantage to claim the 63-51 win.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Dinges scored in double figures for the third-straight game, netting a career-high 13 points. She also tied her career high in rebounding (nine) and added two assists and one steal.
• Hamburger scored a career-high 10 points on the strength of 8-8 shooting at the foul line. Hamburger scored a total of eight points in her previous nine appearances.
• A group of freshmen, including Dinges, Hamburger and
Sami Mancini (five points) combined to score 28 of the Friars' 63 points.
•
Orlagh Gormley dished a game-high four assists and added seven points and three boards. She has recorded 3+ assists in 10 of 12 games this season.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 21 against BIG EAST foe Georgetown. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
