Women's Basketball Defeats Georgetown In Overtime, 68-61

Sabou Gueyes netted a career-high 23 points; Orlagh Gormley also hit a career-high with 15 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Georgetown, 68-61, in overtime on Dec. 21 in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 8-5 on the season, including 1-2 in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas dropped to 7-4 (0-2 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars found themselves trailing 12-6 with 4:09 to play in the quarter.
Sabou Gueye collected two steals and scored seven-straight points for Providence in a span of 39-seconds. 
• The spurt gave Providence a 13-12 lead with 2:08 left in the frame.
• The Friars held a 17-15 lead at the break and Gueye scored 13 points in the quarter on 6-9 shooting.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence pushed its lead to 24-17 with 6:55 remaining in the quarter on a three by Orlagh Gormley.
• Georgetown responded with a 18-4 scoring advantage to claim a 35-28 lead with 36-seconds on the clock.
Ashley Dinges drilled hit a three for Providence to finish the quarter and cut the Friars' deficit to 35-31 at halftime.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars used a 7-0 run to tie the game, 40-40, and forced a Georgetown timeout with 6:25 on the clock.
• Providence extended its run to 11-0 with four-straight points from Gormley to go ahead 44-40.
• Georgetown closed out the quarter with a 8-4 scoring edge to tie the game at the break (48-48).
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Neither team could get a lead larger than two points in the fourth quarter.
• Gueye scored in the paint with 48-seconds left in regulation to put Providence ahead 59-57.
• Providence had a chance to extend its lead at the free-throw line, but were unable to convert.
• The Hoyas managed to tie the game with one-second left on the clock as Cristen Carter scored from the block off an inbounds play.
 
OVERTIME:
• Providence started overtime with a 7-0 run.
• The Hoyas scored their only points of OT with1:17 left to play.
• Dinges closed out the game with a pair of free throws with two-seconds left. 
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye scored a career-high 23 points and added eight rebounds, one assist, six steals and three blocked shots. She shot 10-15 from the field and 3-3 from the foul line.
• Six of Gueye's eight boards came off the offensive glass.
• Gormley scored a career-high 15 points and added seven boards, six assists and four steals.
• Dinges scored in double figures for the fourth-straight game since being inserted into the starting line-up. She finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and one blocked shot.
• Providence held a 46-37 rebounding advantage in the game.
• The Friars earned their first win over Georgetown at Alumni Hall since Feb. 28, 2020. That day, Providence defeated Georgetown 62-55.
• Last season, Providence and Georgetown split the regular-season series, with each team winning on the road.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 28 against No. 3/3 South Carolina at Noon. The game will be played at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C. and will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
