Women's Basketball Defeated At No. 3/3 South Carolina, 96-55

Sabou Gueye netted 16 points while Nalani Kaysia hauled in 11 rebounds.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated, 96-55, by No. 3/3 South Carolina on Dec. 28 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C. The Friars moved to 8-6 on the season, while the Gamecocks improved to 13-1 overall.
 
1ST QUARTER:
Teneisia Brown hit her first three field-goal attempts and the Friars were 6-9 from the field overall through the first five minutes of the game. 
• South Carolina held a 17-13 lead at the media timeout (5:08).
• The Gamecocks used a 7-0 run to go ahead 24-15 with 3:16 on the clock.
• At the break, Providence trailed, 29-19.
• Brown paced the Friars with seven points in the first quarter.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Gamecocks used a 7-0 spurt heading into the media to take a 40-23 advantage (4:58).
Sabou Gueye hit a pair of free throws out of the break to halt the run (40-25).
• South Carolina pushed its lead back to 17 with 2:09 left, but the Friars cut deficit to 12 at halftime (46-34).
• At the half, Brown (11) and Gueye (10) were both in double figures, while Nalani Kaysia hauled in a team-high five boards.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• South Carolina started the third with a 15-4 scoring edge to take a 61-38 lead.
• The Gamecocks outscored the Friars 27-11 in the third quarter, including an 8-0 run over the final 3:06, to claim a 73-45 lead.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• SC led 87-47 at the media timeout, outscoring Providence 14-2 through the opening five minutes.
• The Gamecocks continued to distance themselves en route to the 96-55 win.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye paced the Friars with 16 points and added one rebound, one assist and one steal.
• Brown also finished in double figures with 11 points on 5-7 shooting.
• Kaysia, in just her second game as a Friar, played 28 minutes and recorded seven points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Ashley Dinges was held to single digits for the first time in five games, with seven points.
Orlagh Gormley dished a team-best five assists. She has handed out 5+ assists in seven games this season.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will host No. 1/1 Connecticut at Amica Mutual Pavilion on Wednesday, Dec. 3. The game will be broadcast on Peacock and is scheduled to tip at 3:00 p.m.
