FRIARS HIT THE ROAD TO FACE NO. 3/3 SOUTH CAROLINA... Providence College will travel to Columbia, S.C. to face No. 3/3 South Carolina on Sunday, Dec. 28. Tipoff is set for 12:00 p.m. at Colonial Life Arena and the game will be broadcast on SEC Network. It will mark the Friars' first game of the season against a nationally ranked opponent.Â
PROVIDENCE AND SOUTH CAROLINA TO MEET FOR FIRST TIME... Sunday's game between Providence College and No. 3/3 South Carolina will mark the first meeting all-time between the two programs.
LAST TIME PROVIDENCE DEFEATED A RANKED OPPONENT... Providence College last defeated a nationally ranked opponent on Jan. 4, 2023. On that day, the Friars claimed a 79-75 victory over No. 25/24 Creighton at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb.
TOP-10 WINS... The Friars have defeated a team ranked inside the top-10 of the national polls on two occasions during the history of the program. Providence defeated No. 5/9 NC State, 112-111, in overtime on Dec. 3, 1989 in Providence, R.I. On Jan. 12, 1980, the Friars defeated No. 9 Cheyney State, 50-46, in Providence, R.I.
WINS OVER RANKED OPPONENTS... The Friars have recorded 16 victories over nationally-ranked opponents all-time. Four of those 16 victories were secured on the road or at a neutral site, while 12 were claimed at home in Providence, R.I.
ALL-TIME VS. THE SEC... Providence is 1-13 all-time vs. the SEC. Providence's lone victory came against Alabama (78-75) on Dec. 2, 2001. The Friars are 1-2 vs. Alabama, 0-3 vs. Tennessee, 0-2 vs. Florida, 0-2 vs. Auburn, 0-1 vs. Vanderbilt and 0-3 vs. Arkansas.
FORMER GAMECOCK VALERIE NAINIMA RETURNS TO COLUMBIA WITH THE FRIARS... Valerie Nainima is in her third season as the Friars' assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. She played two seasons for Dawn Staley at South Carolina from 2009-2011. As a junior in 2009-10, she averaged 17.0 points per game and earned Second-Team All-SEC honors. She ranked 17th in the nation and fourth in the SEC in three-point field goals made per game (2.8), having finished the year 82-229 from the arc (.358). Nainima tore her ACL during the summer before her senior season and accelerated her rehabilitation to get back on the court in December and eventually started 15 of the final 17 games. She averaged 6.3 points in her final campaign.
HOME-SWEET-HOME... The Friars have posted a 7-2 record at home in Alumni Hall / Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. When playing away from home, the Friars have posted a 1-3 record [0-2 in true road games; 1-1 at a neutral site].
FRIARS DEFEAT GEORGETOWN IN OVERTIME TO CLAIM FIRST BIG EAST WIN OF THE YEAR... Sabou Gueye scored a career-high 23 points and added eight rebounds, one assist, six steals and three blocked shots to lift Providence over BIG EAST foe Georgetown, 68-61, in overtime on Dec. 21. It marked the Friars' first league win of the season after starting the year 0-2 in the BIG EAST. Providence ran away from the Hoyas in the extra session with a 9-2 scoring advantage. Orlagh Gormley netted a career-high 15 points and added seven boards, six assists and four steals. Ashley Dinges rounded out the list of double-digit scorers with 12 points and she also secured seven rebounds. Providence defeated Georgetown on its home court for the first time since the 2019-20 season.
SABOU GUEYE NAMED TO BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL... Sabou Gueye was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Dec. 22. Gueye earned league honors for the third time this season, having previously been named to the weekly honor roll on Nov. 17 and Nov. 24. Gueye scored a career-high 23 points in the Friars 68-61 overtime victory against Georgetown on Dec. 22. It marked Providence's only game of the week. Gueye shot 10-15 from the field and 3-3 from the foul line in the game. She also recorded a game-high eight rebounds (six offensive), six steals and three blocks and added one assist.Â
SABOU GUEYE'S FIRST SEASON AS A FRIAR... In her first season with the Friars, grad transfer Sabou Gueye leads the team in scoring with 13.9 points per game and shoots a team-best 51-percent from the field (76-149) and 73-percent from the foul line (27-37). She ranks second among her teammates in rebounding (6.2 rpg), assists (1.9 apg) and steals (1.9 spg). She leads the Friars in double-digit scoring games (eight) and 20-point games (three), and is tied for the team lead in double-doubles (two). Gueye ranks in the top-10 in the BIG EAST in points (7th, 181), points per game (7th, 13.9), field goals (4th, 76), field-goal percentage (5th, .510), and blocks per game (9th, 1.1)
ASHLEY DINGES EMERGING AS SEASON PROGRESSES... Freshman Ashley Dinges has appeared in the starting line-up during each of the Friars' last four games. Her first career start came on Sunday, Dec. 7 against St. John's and scored 12 points on 5-9 shooting, including a 2-3 performance beyond the arc. She added three boards, one assist and one steal. In her four starts, she leads the team in scoring (11.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.0 rpg), while shooting 49-percent from the field (19-39), including 39-percent from beyond the three-point line (7-18). In 13 games overall, Dinges is averaging 6.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game.
TENEISIA BROWN IS TOUGH ON THE GLASS... Teneisia Brown leads the team and ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in total rebounds (97) and fifth in rebounds per game (7.5 rpg). She has hauled in a season-best 14 rebounds in two games vs. Central Connecticut (Nov. 10) and Bryant (Nov. 30). Her career high in BIG EAST Conference play for rebounding is 10 (vs. St. John's, 12/7/25).
DOUBLE DIGITS... Sabou Gueye leads the Friars in double-digit scoring games (eight) and 20-point games (three). Gueye leads the team and ranks seventh in the BIG EAST in scoring average at 13.9 points per game. Seven other players on the roster have reached double figures, including Teneisia Brown (seven), Payton Dunbar (five), Orlagh Gormley (four), Ashley Dinges (four), Sophi Hall (one), Riley Hamburger (one) and Audrey Shields (one).Â
FLOOR GENERAL... Sophomore Orlagh Gormley has returned to the court as the Friars' floor general after sitting out the final 22 games of her freshman campaign with an injury. She's making an impact on both ends of the floor, leading the team in assists (4.4 apg) and steals (2.1 spg), while also contributing 7.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Gormley has recorded 3+ assists in 11 of 13 games, including six games with five-or-more assists. Additionally, Gormley ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in assists per game and fourth in assist/turnover ratio (2.11) and fifth in steals (2.1).
BEYOND THE ARC... Payton Dunbar is starting to heat up from three-point territory after a slow start to the season. She's currently shooting 33-percent from deep (25-76) and ranks ninth in the BIG EAST in three-point field goals made per game (1.9). She has hit 4+ threes in a game four times this seasons. Over the last three games, Dunbar has shot 41.2-percent from the arc (7-17).
DEFENSE... The Friars rank second in the BIG EAST and rank 32nd in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 54.6 points per game. Furthermore, Providence ranks second in field-goal percentage defense (31st of 359 in NCAA), having held its opponents to 35.2-percent from the floor. Providence has held 11 of its 13 opponents below 40-percent shooting from the field.Â
DOUBLE-DOUBLE TROUBLE... Sabou Gueye and Teneisia Brown are tied for the team lead in double-doubles this season, with two each. Gueye tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds vs. Boston College (Nov. 15) and 16 points and 12 rebounds vs. Xavier (Dec. 4). Brown recorded 12 points and 14 rebounds against Central Connecticut (Nov. 10) and 11 points and 10 boards vs. St. John's (Dec. 7).Â
FRIARS ARE 0-3 WHEN OUT-REBOUNDED BY OPPONENT... The Friars are 0-3 this season when they record fewer rebounds than their opponent, including a 0-2 mark in BIG EAST play. Providence was out-rebounded by Xavier (38-34), St. John's (31-29) and Rhode Island (39-36). Providence's 29 boards vs. St. John's on Dec. 7 marks a season-low.
FRIARS LET ONE SLIP AWAY AT ST. JOHN'S... The Friars led by as many as 16 points at the 6:27 mark of the third quarter at St. John's on Sunday, Dec. 7, but let the game slip away in the fourth. The Red Storm outscored Providence 23-9 in the final 10 minutes of play, including an 11-1 advantage in the final 3:23. Teneisia Brown recorded her second double-double of the season (11 pts / 10 rebs) and Orlagh Gormley and Ashley Dinges each tallied 12 points. St. John's shot 48.9-percent from the field in the game (23-47) and Brooke Moore paced three St. John's players in double figures with a game-high 16 points.Â
OFF THE MARK AT XAVIER... The Friars shot a season-low 31.7-percent from the field (20-63), including 3-20 from three-point territory (.150) in a 61-47 loss to Xavier on Dec. 4. Providence shot below 30-percent in each of the first two quarters to find itself trailing 30-19 at halftime. The Friars rallied in the third to outscore the Musketeers, 20-17, and climbed within six points on two occasions early in the fourth quarter, but were held scoreless over the final 5:20 of the game. Sabou Gueye recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds and Teneisia Brown added 12 points and nine rebounds to lead the Friars. Gueye and Brown combined to shoot 50-percent from the field (12-24), while the rest of the team converted just 8-39 shots from the floor (.205). Xavier became the first opponent this season to shoot over 40-percent from the field vs. Providence (.442, 23-52).Â
FRIARS SHOOT SEASON-BEST 50-PERCENT FROM THE FLOOR... The Friars enjoyed their best shooting performance of the season in their win over Yale on Nov. 21. Providence shot 50-percent from the field (27-54), including 66.7-percent from the three-point arc (6-9). Providence has shot better than 40-percent in just three games this season, including its most recent game against Georgetown on Dec. 21 (.419, 26-62). The Friars are 3-0 when shooting north of 40-percent.
SOPHI HALL PERFECT EN ROUTE TO A CAREER-BEST 18 POINTS... Junior Sophi Hall played 13 minutes off the bench in the Friars' match-up against Yale (Nov. 21) and recorded a career-high 18 points. Sixteen of her 18 points came in the second half. She was perfect from the field (5-5), including a 3-3 showing from beyond the arc. She also was 5-5 from the foul line.
PAYTON DUNBAR'S CAREER-HIGH 22 POINTS LIFT FRIARS OVER BOSTON COLLEGE... Sophomore Payton Dunbar recorded a career-high 22 points against Boston College on Nov. 15. Dunbar shot 8-14 from the field, including a 5-10 performance beyond the arc. Entering the game, Dunbar was 0-9 from three-point territory.Â
PAYTON DUNBAR NAMED TO EMERALD COAST CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM... Sophomore transfer Payton Dunbar was named to the Emerald Coast Classic All-Tournament team on Nov. 25. She averaged 13.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.0 steal per game. She shot 42-percent from the field (10-24), including 35-percent from three-point territory. Dunbar paced the Friars with a game-high 19 points in a 64-33 victory over Alcorn State.
BIG DAY ON THE BOARDS VS. CCSU... The Friars recorded 55 rebounds against Central Connecticut on Nov. 10. It marked the most rebounds in a game for Providence since Nov. 9, 2013. On that day, the team hauled in a program-record 65 boards against UMass Lowell. Against CCSU, Teneisia Brown recorded a game-high 14 rebounds. A trio of Friars, including Sabou Gueye, Orlagh Gormley and Ashley Dinges each recorded eight rebounds.Â
TENEISIA BROWN ECLIPSES 1,300 CAREER POINTS... Grad transfer Teneisia Brown has eclipsed 1,300 points for her career. Brown arrived at Providence for her final season after stops at Merrimack (2020-22) and Fairleigh Dickinson (2023-25). She averaged double figures in the scoring column during each of her last three seasons of college basketball and currently ranks third on the team in scoring for the Friars through 13 games (10.1 ppg). Brown has a career scoring total of 1,317 points heading into Sunday's game vs. South Carolina.

BIG EAST PRESEASON POLL... The Friars were picked to finish 10th in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, released at the league's annual media day on Oct. 21 at Madison Square Garden. Last season, Providence completed the year with a 13-19 overall record and claimed a seventh-place finish in the regular-season standings with a 6-12 conference record.Â
ERIN BATTH ERA... Erin Batth enters her third season with the Friars in 2025-26. She was hired as the 11th women's basketball coach in program history at Providence College on March 20, 2023. Batth arrived in Friartown with 17 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience, with her most recent stops coming at NC State (2018-22) and Michigan (2022-23). She has been part of five conference championships, eight NCAA Elite Eight appearances and three trips to the NCAA Sweet 16. She also served as an assistant coach at Liberty (2017-18), Georgia State (2014-17), Tennessee Tech (2012-14) and Towson (2010-12). Batth earned her first career win as a head coach on Nov. 7 vs. Hampton (76-46). She helped the Friars earn a bid to the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) in her first year at Providence in 2023-24.
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 31 against top-ranked Connecticut in BIG EAST regular-season action. The game will be played at Amica Mutual Pavilion in downtown Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to tip at 3:00 p.m.
