PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Rhode Island Rams outscored Providence College, 26-13, during the final 8:27 of the game to claim a 57-51 victory at Alumni Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 10. The Rams improved to 9-2 on the season, while the Friars dropped to 6-5 overall.
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence suffered a scoring drought of more than five minutes, while the Rams claimed a 10-4 advantage with 3:27 to play.
• Sabou Gueye ended the drought with a steal and a lay-up at the 2:29 mark.
• The Rams closed out the quarter with a 6-3 scoring advantage to take a 18-9 lead into the break.
• Providence shot 24-percent from the field (4-17), while URI converted 6-12 shot attempts for a 50-percent clip.
2ND QUARTER:
• URI pushed out to a 13-point lead, but the Friars used an 11-4 scoring advantage over the final 7:15 of the quarter to inch within six at halftime (26-20).
• Ashley Dinges and Payton Dunbar each scored five points in the first half.
• The Rams were led by Brooklyn Gray's 10 points and seven rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence started the third on an 8-0 run to take a 28-26 lead.
• Teneisia Brown scored six points in the run on 2-2 shooting from the field and 2-2 shooting from the foul line.
• The Rams got on the board with a lay-in at the 7:17 mark, but Dunbar answered with back-to-back three pointers for the Friars to give her squad a 34-28 lead.
• Providence outscored Rhode Island 14-2 through the first 5:08 of the third quarter as the teams went to their respective benches for the media timeout (4:52).
• Providence outscored URI 16-5 in the third quarter overall and carried a 36-31 lead into the final frame.
4TH QUARTER:
• Dunbar hit a pull-up jumper to get the offense going in the fourth, but a 5-0 run by the Rams cut the deficit to 38-36 and forced a Providence timeout.
• The Friars scored four-straight points to provide a six-point cushion with 6:40 to play (42-36).
• From there, URI went on a 14-1 run to claim a 50-43 advantage.
• Providence made it a one possession game with an 8-4 scoring advantage, which included threes from Dinges and Dunbar (54-51).
• URI closed out the game from the free throw line to escape with a 57-51 victory.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• The Friars trailed by nine after the first quarter but outscored the Rams 27-13 in the second and third quarters to take a 36-31 lead into the fourth quarter.
• Providence hit the first bucket of the fourth quarter to earn its largest lead of the game (38-31) with 8:41 remaining in the game.
• URI finished with a 26-13 scoring advantage over the final 8:27 of regulation to claim the win.
• Brown scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the second half and added six rebounds and two steals. She shot 5-12 from the field and 7-8 from the foul line.
• Dunbar scored 16 points on 6-14 shooting, including a 4-8 performance from the three-point arc.
• Dinges earned her second-straight start for the Friars and recorded 10 points and five rebounds.
• Point guard Orlagh Gormley dished a career-high eight assists and led the team in rebounding, with six boards.
• The Friars' defense held the Rams to a season-low 29.6-percent shooting from the field (16-54). URI entered the game shooting 45.2-percent from the field.
• The Rams held a 39-36 advantage in rebounding.
• The Friars have been outrebounded in each of their last three outings and have posted an 0-3 record in those games.
• Providence leads the all-time series with Rhode Island, 41-15.
