Women's Basketball Moves On To WNIT Round Of 16 With 64-54 Win Over Penn

Friars will host Georgetown on Tuesday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Penn, 64-54, on March 24 in Round 2 of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) in Providence, R.I.  Providence improved to 19-15 on the year, while co-Ivy League champion Penn concluded its season with a 24-7 mark.  The Friars will host BIG EAST foe Georgetown in the Round of 16 on Tuesday, March 24 at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.

Both teams were relatively cold from the field through the first 10 minutes of action, as Providence gained a 13-9 advantage at the end of one.  Penn's only lead of the game come with 6:12 remaining in the frame (6-4), but the Friars responded with five-straight points to gain a 9-6 edge. Â

Penn crept within one points on two occasions in the second quarter, but the Friars held the Quakers to 1-12 shooting in the final 5:45 of the half to take a 29-20 lead into halftime.

The Friars took their largest lead of the game (11) as Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) opened the third quarter with a lay-up.  Providence would maintain its 11-point cushion (38-27) with 5:21 on the clock.  From there, Penn closed the quarter on a 10-0 run to make it a one-point game going into the break (38-37).

Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) opened the fourth quarter with a triple, and Providence would eventually push its lead out to double figures (55-45) with 1:17 remaining in the game.  Penn refused to go way, getting as close as six down the stretch, but the Friars closed the game with 8-8 shooting from the foul line in the final 34-seconds of play. During that stretch, freshman Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) hit 6-6 from the charity stripe.

Baskerville recorded her sixth double-double of the season on 20 points and 15 rebounds.  It marked the second-straight 20-point game (and just the second of her career).  Nogic finished with 13 points, including eight in the fourth quarter.  Webb completed the game with 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.  Sophomore guard Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) posted eight points on 4-4 shooting along with three assists and one steal.

Providence took care of the ball, turning it over just 11 times in the game.  The Friars used a 23-3 advantage in points off of turnovers as the squad forced 18 Penn miscues.

Princess Aghayere led Penn with 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Ashley Russell also added 15 points and chipped in four assists.
