CINCINNATI, OHIO – The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Xavier in its BIG EAST opener, 61-47, on Dec. 4 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Providence dropped to 6-3 overall (0-1 BIG EAST), while Xavier improved to 5-3 (1-1 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence missed its first eight shots from the field before
Teneisia Brown knocked down a short jumper at the 5:44 mark to make the score 6-2.
• The Friars were 4-20 from the field in the first quarter and trailed 16-8 at the break.
2ND QUARTER:
•
Payton Dunbar opened the second quarter with a triple from the right wing to cut the deficit to 16-11.
• Xavier pushed its lead to 25-13 at the media timeout (5:00).
• The Friars trailed by as many as 15 in the quarter but closed the quarter with a 4-0 spurt to get within 30-19 at halftime.
• Providence held Xavier scoreless in the final 3:08 of the second quarter.

Sabou Gueye led the Friars with eight points and seven rebounds in the first half.
3RD QUARTER:
• The third quarter was back-and-forth with the teams trading baskets for much of the frame.

Orlagh Gormley hit a baseline three with 1:16 on the clock to get Providence within eight.
• It remained an eight-point deficit at the intermission (47-39) as the Friars outscored Xavier 20-17 in the quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence cut the lead to six, but a Petra Oborilova knocked down a contested three for Xavier to provide some breathing room (52-43) with 8:09 on the clock.
• It remained a 10-point Xavier lead for nearly four minutes as each side was scoreless (57-47).
• Xavier ended the drought with a lay-up at the 1:28 mark to claim a 59-47 lead.
• The Friars were scoreless for the final 5:20 of the game.
HIGHLIGHTS / NOTES:
• Gueye recorded her second double-double of the season and fourth of her career with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Her 12 boards tied her career high.
• Brown finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
• Gueye and Brown combined to shoot 12-24 from the field (.500). The rest of the team combined to shoot 8-39 (.205).
• The Friars were outrebounded for the first time this season (38-34).
• Xavier also became the first opponent to shoot over 40-percent vs. the Friars. The Musketeers converted 44-percent of their field goal attempts (23-52).
• Mariyah Noel scored a game-high 20 points for Xavier and was one of three Musketeers to crack double digits.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will travel to Queens, N.Y. to take on St. John's at Carnesecca Arena. Tipoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
