PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Bryant University, 62-53, on Sunday, Nov. 30 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 6-2 on the season, while Bryant dropped its first game of the year and dipped to 7-1.
1ST QUARTER:
• Bryant got out to an 11-3 lead to force a Providence timeout with 4:53 on the clock. The Friars started the game 1-7 from the field, while Bryant hit 4-6 attempts in the early going.
• Ashley Dinges hit a jumper from the elbow to end a three-minute scoring drought for Providence at the 3:45 mark (14-5).
• Dinges' bucket sparked a 12-1 run over the final 3:45 of the quarter to tie the game, 15-15.
• Dinges led all scorers in the opening 10 minutes with seven points.
2ND QUARTER:
• Sabou Gueye opened the second quarter with back-to-back buckets to give Providence a 19-15 lead.
• The two teams traded baskets into the media timeout, with the Friars leading 23-21 (4:56).
• The Friars went on a 7-0 run out of the timeout to claim a nine-point advantage (30-21).
• Bryant cut the deficit to 32-27 at halftime.
• Gueye led all scorers with 10 first-half points, while Payton Dunbar added eight.
• Dinges hauled in a team-best six boards and added seven points.
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars opened the third with a 7-0 run to take a 39-27 lead through the first 2:32 of play.
• Providence's defense held Bryant scoreless for nearly four minutes while extending its lead to 14 points (46-32).
• Dunbar hit her fourth three of the game with five seconds left in the quarter to give Providence a 51-36 lead at the intermission.
• Providence outscored Bryant 19-9 in the third.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Friars extended their lead to 55-38 with 6:15 remaining in the contest.
• The Bulldogs cut the deficit to eight (61-53) with 16-seconds left to play.
• Bryant outscored Providence 17-11 in the fourth quarter.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Gueye led the Friars in scoring with 18 points, while Dunbar chipped in 15 points.
• Teneisia Brown tied her season high in rebounding (14) and contributed eight points.
• Dinges fell just short of her first double-double with a career-high nine points and nine rebounds.
• Providence won the glass with a 43-33 advantage in rebounding. The Friars grabbed 16 offensive boards and outscored Bryant 12-6 in second-chance points.
• The Friars have held each of their opponents to under 40-percent shooting from the field this season.
• Providence held Bryant to 21 points below its scoring average. The Bulldogs came into the game scoring 74.6 points per game and the Friars held them to 53 on the day.
• The Friars improved to 11-1 all-time against Bryant and snapped the Bulldog's seven-game win streak to start the season. Bryant entered the game with a 7-0 record, marking the best start in program history.
