NEW YORK, N.Y. – The BIG EAST announced its annual women's soccer awards today (Nov. 4). Providence earned one major award accompanied by four All-BIG EAST selections. No. 6 seeded Providence defeated No. 3 seeded Butler on Sunday, Nov. 3 in penalty kicks to advance to the BIG EAST Semifinal in Omaha, Neb. on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 8:30 p.m. (ET).
Providence's
Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) becomes the first Friar to earn one of the league's major postseason awards as she tabbed BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year. She also earned recognition on the All-BIG EAST First Team. She led the league with 52 saves over Providence's nine-game BIG EAST slate, posting a .788 save percentage. Hogan recorded double-digit saves in two BIG EAST contests, including 10 against Georgetown and 12 at Creighton. She holds four shutouts on the year, including one combined shutout against St. John's. The redshirt-junior earned All-BIG EAST Second Team recognition in her first two seasons in net. This year's selection marks the first time a Providence goaltender has been named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Hogan was named the BIG EAST Preseason Goaltender of the Year, a member of the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and recognized as the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week two times this season. Hogan is just the third Friar in program history to earn All-BIG EAST honors in three seasons, joining Jenna Roncarati (13') and Catherine Zimmerman (16').
Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) makes her second-consecutive appearance on the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Prior to the start of the season she was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. McNulty tallied a team-high nine goals for the Friars, and started in every contest. Her lone multi-goal performance came against Creighton on Oct. 19, scoring two second half goals to push the Friars over the Bluejays, 2-1. She recorded four game-winning goals on the season against UMass-Lowell (Sept. 5), Northeastern (Sept. 22), St. John's (Sept. 28) and Creighton (Oct. 19). McNulty ranked third in the league in shots (66), eighth in the league in goals (eight) and third in game-winning goals (four). In the BIG EAST First Round against Butler, McNulty scored a free kick late in the second half to force overtime, and the Friars eventually advances in PK's.
Lisa Verhoeven and
Alexis Rothmann are the second duo of Friars to be named to the All-BIG EAST Freshman Team. The last pair was
Amber Birchwell and
Shelby Hogan in 2017. Verhoeven started all 19 games as a rookie on the back line. She totaled 1,752 minutes on the season and helped lead the defense to five clean sheets. Rothmann controlled the midfield in her debut season. She started every match under Head Coach
Sam Lopes this season and posted 12 shots, playing in 1,721 minutes for the Friars.
All-BIG EAST Teams and major awards are voted on by the league's head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own players. All-BIG EAST First and Second Teams are comprised of three forwards, three midfielders, three defenders, one goalkeeper and one at-large selection. The BIG EAST All-Freshman Team recognizes the top-11 freshman vote earners.
Providence matches up with Georgetown in the BIG EAST Semifinal on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 8:30 p.m. The game will be played in Omaha, Neb.
