PROVIDENCE, R.I.- On Saturday, Oct. 5 the Providence College men's lacrosse program hosted its annual alumni game and awards banquet to recognize outstanding player and team accomplishments from the 2019 season.

The current team, alumni, family and friends gathered in Schneider Arena to celebrate the 2019 season. Following the banquet, the 2020 roster defeated the alumni, 15-5.
Off the field, the Providence College men's lacrosse team celebrated their 26 student-athletes who made the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, marking the most all time. The team had a cumulative grade point average of 3.10 in Spring 2019. This marked the program's sixth-straight semester with a team cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

Tim Hinrichs '20 (Amherst, N.H.) ,
Kevin McCordic '20 (Medfield, Mass.) and
Ryan Zimmerman '20 (Syracuse, N.Y.) were inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honors Society.
The Rookie of the Year was presented to
Matt Grillo '22 (Setauket, N.Y.). Grillo started all 15 games he appeared in and tallied 30 goals, 10 assists and 40 points. Grillo led the Friars in shots (99), ranked second in goals (30) and third in points (40). Grillo earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week (Apr. 15), BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (Feb. 25) and the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
The Steve O'Donnell Coach's Award was presented to recent Providence College graduate
Duncan McGinnis '19. McGinnis played in four games last season and scored one goal versus 17
th-ranked Villanova, as Providence defeated the Wildcats, 9-8, in overtime. The award is named after former Providence College lacrosse coach Steve O'Donnell, who is currently the head coach at La Salle Academy. Coach O'Donnell was on hand at the banquet to present the award to McGinnis and share a few words.
Luke Verrochi '19 and
Emmett Jennings '21 (Fair Haven, N.J.) were co-recipients of the Most Improved Players Award. Verrochi appeared in 13 games, picked up seven ground balls and caused six turnovers. Jennings appeared in all 16 games and tallied 32 ground balls and caused 22 turnovers.
The Jay Sabitoni "Hammer" Award was given to
David Procopio '19. The award is named for one of the most physical players in program history, Jay Sabitoni '87, who was at the event to present the award. The honor recognizes the player who displays persistent toughness, fearlessness and physicality on the field. Procopio's senior campaign featured appearances in all 16 games. He picked up 13 ground balls, caused six turnovers, and recorded one goal and one assist.
Nick Crews '19 and
Luke Verrochi '19 earned the Academic Achievement Award. Crews graduated with a bachelor of science in finance and a minor in computer science/business programming. He graduated Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.61. Verrochi was a member of the Liberal Arts Honors Program and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.73. He graduated with a bachelor of science in finance and minor in economics.
Chris Zanelli '19 and
Tyler Wilks '19 were honored with the Best Teammate Award. This award is presented to distinguished individuals who display selflessness and consistently prioritizes the team through leadership on and off the field. The award was presented by
Micky Carbone '18, the winner of the Best Teammate Award in 2018.
The Mike Chapey Offensive MVP Award was presented to
Nick Hatzipetrakos '19 and
Brendan Kearns '19. Hatzipetrakos led the Friars in goals (39) and tied for first in points (46). Hatzipetrakos was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, twice (Mar. 11, Apr. 8), and earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Kearns ranked first in assists (19), tied for first in points (46) and third in goals (27). Hatzipetrakos was named the Most Outstanding Player in the USILA North-South game. Kearns was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, twice (Feb. 11, Mar. 4), and was drafted by the New York Lizards in the MLL Draft. Kearns recorded 12 goals and five assists in five games with the Lizards.
Tate Boyce '19 was awarded The Brian O'Rorke Defensive MVP Award by Premier League Lacrosse All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year,
Jarrod Neumann '17. Boyce is the most decorated lacrosse player in Friar history. Boyce earned USILA All-America Honorable Mention honors in 2019, and became the first player in program history to achieve All-America status in multiple seasons. He was also named to the USILA All-America Third Team in 2017. Boyce was a four-time All-BIG EAST First-Team selection and two-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year. He is the only player in program history to earn All-Conference First-Team recognition each season of his four-year career. He also is the first player to earn Goalkeeper of the Year recognition in multiple seasons. Additionally, Boyce is the first player in program history to be named to the Tewaaraton Watch List and was featured among the nation's top lacrosse players on the list in back-to-back seasons (2018 and 2019). Boyce was also named USILA Scholar All-America and the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The goalkeeper, who also is a Finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, was signed to the Boston Cannons of the MLL on May 13.
The Mark Cordon "Heart and Soul" Award was presented to
Joseph McHale '19. The award recognizes an individual who displays leadership and exemplified qualities of hard work and dedication. The award is given annually in the memory of Mark C. Cordon '89 who tragically lost his battle with cancer in October, 1998. It is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a lacrosse student-athlete at Providence College. The 2018 recipient of the award,
James Barclay '18, presented the award to McHale. Barclay helped lead the Whipsnakes to the inaugural Premier Lacrosse League championship last month. McHale played in all 16 games and totaled seven points on three goals and four assists.
Matt Pymm '99 was awarded The Spignesi/Horrigan Alumni Award. The award was named after Providence College lacrosse founder Dr. Tom Spignesi '77 and alumnus Sean Horrigan '91. Pymm was presented with the award by Dr. Spignesi.
Additionally, members of the Providence College lacrosse program earned recognition from various outside organizations. Awards and accolades are as follows:
