Volleyball Edged By DePaul In Four Sets

The Friars return home to face Xavier and Butler next weekend.

CHICAGO, Ill.- The Providence College volleyball team fell to DePaul, 3-1, on Saturday, Oct. 12 in Chicago, Ill. DePaul took the first two sets (25-17, 25-12) before Providence attempted to come back, with a victory in the third set, 27-25. The Blue Demons closed out the match in the fourth set, 25-16. Providence fell to 5-14 (0-6 BIG EAST). DePaul improved to 10-8 (2-4 BIG EAST).
 
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: After a 6-6 tie, DePaul went on a 10-2 run to claim the lead in the set (16-8). DePaul went on to win the set, 25-17.
 
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) led the Friars in all major categories with three kills on six total attacks, four assists and three digs. 
 
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: The Blue Demons began the set with a 12-0 run. DePaul maintained the lead throughout the set and won, 25-12.
 
Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) recorded two kills on two total attacks.
 
Barber paced the Friars with four assists.
 
Natalie Benson (Bourbonnais, Ill.) registered four digs.
 
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: DePaul started the set on an 8-2 run. DePaul would maintain a sizable lead before Providence went on a 11-2 run late in the set to tie it at 24. The Friars carried the momentum from the run and claimed the set, 27-25.
 
Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) tallied seven kills on 13 total attacks.
 
Barber had a set-high 12 assists.
 
Benson and Jennifer Leitman (Irvine, Calif.) led the Friars with five digs each.
 
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: DePaul started the set with a 7-2 run. Providence got within two (10-8) but DePaul held Providence off to win, 25-16.
 
Root registered five kills on 11 total attacks.
 
Barber recorded a set-high 10 assists.
 
Benson had a team-high three digs.
 
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS: 
 
Root led the Friar attack with 14 kills on 35 total attacks.
 
Barber recorded her 15th double-double of the season with 30 assists and 11 digs. The junior now ranks fifth all-time in Friar volleyball history in assists.
 
Benson tallied 12 digs.
 
As a team, the Friars recorded 41 kills on 127 total attacks, 49 digs and 37 assists.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: Providence returns home to take on Xavier and Butler. The Friars host the Musketeers on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6:00 p.m. and the Bulldogs on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1:00 p.m. The matchup against Xavier will be featured on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) and the program's annual Pink Out Game will be against Butler.
