PROVIDENCE, R.I. - On Thursday, January 3, the Providence College lacrosse team traveled to New York City for the program's Annual Career Networking Day. A signature event for the program, the Lacrosse Networking Day has yielded

countless jobs for our student-athletes, literally around the world.

The day started with familiar faces on the trading floor of Jefferies Investment Bank, where Friar lacrosse alumni Matt Pymm '99 and Brian McCarthy '00 hosted the group.  Joining in the presentation were Tori Gilliland '15, Lauren Griffin '16, Megan Davidson '17, Mal Mahon '17 and Ian Grey '18.  Both Mahon and Grey attened Lacrosse Networking Day during their time as student-athletes and are examples of the strong connection that PC lacrosse has with Wall Street.

From there the team traveled to Canaccard Genuity to meet with Rich Dunphy, a lacrosse alumnus from the class of '93. Rich has been a part of every NYC Networking Day and his experience and insight in the finance industry has been invaluable to our student-athletes looking to pursue a career in sales and trading.

The third stop of the day was at the BIG EAST Conference where BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman presented to the team on her career path and the choices that she made as a young professional that positioned her for a successful career in the sports industry. Following Ackerman, the team heard from Vince Nicastro, Deputy Commissioner; James Greene, Senior Director of Championships; Chris Schneider, Senior Associate Commissioner and Michael Coyne, Assistant Commissioner for Men's Basketball Operations.

From there the team traveled to Concentric Health Experience, one of the premier healthcare advertising agencies in the world.  Concentric CEO and Friar soccer alumnus Ken Begasse '96 had a panel of his team present on the collaboration and incredible work ethic that takes place at Concentric and has elevated them to the top of their industry.  Also speaking on the panel was Providence College 2018 Female Student-Athlete of the Year, Meg Hamilton '18 who now works at Concentric. She provided relevant advice to the team on how they can earn internships and careers in the advertising industry.

The next stop was at UNTUCKit where the team was treated to a presentation by UNTUCKit Founder, Chris Riccobono '01.  Riccobono presented on the origins of UNTUCKit and how it went from an idea to one of the most successful brands in fashion.  In addition to telling his story, Riccobono provided advice on entrepreneurism and the risks and rewards that align with it.

Sales was the theme of the next stop where Kevin Delane '87 and members of his sales team at Pure Storage presented on the qualities that have made their salesforce one of the elite in the ultra-competitive technology industry.  Delane pointed out that many of the lessons learned on the lacrosse field also carry over to the workforce.  Teamwork, energy, attitude and the ability to work toward shared goals are all characteristics that he looks for in hiring a successful salesperson and his message resonated with our team.

Bank of America and lacrosse alumnus Brian Kirkwood '92 rounded out the day for the Friars.  Kirkwood gave the team a tour of the renovated trading floors at Bank of America and the team got a sense of the competitive and fast paced industry of fixed income trading.  Kirkwood has also been a fixture on the Networking Day circuit and has been a great resource for our program.

The day culminated with the Friends of Friar Lacrosse fundraiser at PJ Clarke's in Lincoln Square, hosted by Tom Boyan '85. More than 40 alumni, parents and friends came out to support the program and $35,000 was raised for the program.

"Lacrosse networking day has evolved into a signature event for our program.  Touring the city today and seeing so many of our recent graduates working at high profile companies and industries shows the strength of our alumni network." Head Coach Chris Gabrielli said. "From Wall Street to Silicon Valley our student-athletes have learned that if they work hard in the classroom they have an alumni network waiting for them when they graduate to assist with their careers."

"I want to thank all of the alumni who hosted us at their companies and have been incredible mentors to our student-athletes," Gabrielli added. "I also want to thank former Board of Trustee and Owner of PJ Clarke's, Tom Boyan '85 and his staff for hosting such a first-class event."
