PROVIDENCE COLLEGE HOSTS SACRED HEART AT ALUMNI HALL... The Providence College women's basketball team will host Sacred Heart on Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is slated for Noon.
FRIARS ALL-ACCESS... Wednesday's game against Sacred Heart will be broadcast live via the internet on Friars All-Access (www.Friars.com), which is a subscription-based service. PROVIDENCE VS. SACRED HEART ALL-TIME... The Friars and Pioneers have met four times during the history of the two programs. Sacred Heart leads the all-time series, 3-1. Providence opened the series with a 59-42 victory on Dec. 28, 1979 at the Kean College Invitational in Union, N.J. The Pioneers have taken wins in each of the last three meetings, including last year's 78-75 victory in Fairfield, Conn. on Dec. 9.
LAST TIME THE TWO TEAMS MET... The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Sacred Heart, 78-75, on Dec. 9 in Fairfield, Conn. Providence faced a 14-point deficit (21-7) with 2:18 remaining in the first quarter. The Friars closed the quarter with a 9-2 run to get within seven at the break (23-16). Providence cut the Pioneers' lead to one on three occasions in the second quarter as Jovana Nogic drained four three-pointers. Sacred Heart pushed its lead to five with 45 seconds remaining on a 6-2 scoring advantage, but Clara Che hit a three with 38-seconds on the clock to make it a two-point game at halftime (35-33). Providence took its first lead of the game (44-42) with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter as Che hit a pull-up jumper on the right baseline. The Friars led by as many as four (52-48), but Sacred Heart responded by taking a 59-58 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes. The fourth quarter featured seven lead changes and three ties. Sacred Heart started off the action with a 5-0 run to take a 64-58 lead with 8:23 on the clock. Providence answered with a 9-0 spurt to regain the lead for the first time in the fourth quarter (67-64), with just under five and a half minutes to play. Providence held a 75-72 edge with 1:43 on the clock, but the Friars went 0-5 from the field down the stretch and committed an untimely turnover with 11 seconds to play and just a one-point deficit (76-75). Sacred Heart converted a pair of free throws to make it a three-point lead (78-75) with 10-seconds left and held on for the win. Providence's three attempts from three-point territory to close the game were off the mark.
SINGLE DIGITS... The Friars have lost their first two games of the season by a combined total of six points. Providence opened the year with a 74-72 loss at Penn State on Nov. 8. The Friars fell to Quinnipiac, 48-44, in their most recent game on Nov. 15.
FOURTH QUARTER COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST QUINNIPIAC... The Providence College women's basketball team staged a fourth-quarter comeback, but fell short in a 48-44 loss to Quinnpiac on Nov. 15 in Providence, R.I. The Friars trailed by 13 (41-28) with 9:25 remaining in the game, but went on a 12-0 run to get within one (41-40) with 2:57 left on the clock. Jen Fay halted the run for the Bobcats with a pair of free throws, but Olivia Orlando answered with two made free throws on the other end to get back within one (43-42). Providence got a stop on the defensive end of the floor and looked to take its first lead since the 6:41 mark of the first quarter, but turned the ball over. Fay went to the line for Quinnpiac and missed both attempts, but the Bobcats kept control of the ball with an offensive board. After a timeout by Quinnipiac, Fay gave her team a 45-42 advantage with 1:22 to play. Senior Maddie Jolin hit two free throws for Providence with 50-seconds on the game clock to make the score 45-44. The Bobcats called timeout to advance the ball to mid-court and drew up another play for Fay, who hit a fall-away jumper as the shot clock was winding down. Providence brought the ball down the floor to the offensive end and called a timeout with 10.2-seconds left. The Friars turned the ball over on the inbounds play, and Fay sealed the win for Quinnipiac with a free throw. Jolin finished the night with nine points for the Friars. Orlando notched six points and a career-high nine rebounds.
FRIARS FALL TO PENN STATE IN SEASON OPENER... The Friars led by as many as 15 points with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter, but fell to Penn State, 74-72 in their season opener on Nov. 8 in University Park, Pa. Providence held the lead for just over 36 minutes of action, but Penn State used a 23-9 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter to gain a tie the game, 72-72, with 36-seconds left on the clock. Providence committed a turnover on its next possession and Penn State's Sam Breen was fouled on the other end with 0.4 seconds left. Breen sank a pair of free throws to give the Nittany Lions their first lead since 4:13 of the first quarter (16-15). Providence called a timeout to advance the ball to mid-court and draw up a final play. Freshman Alyssa Geary converted a bucket off of a lob pass into the post, but the officials waved off the basket after a video review showing the ball was still in her hand as the clock expired.
OLIVIA ORLANDO LEADS THE FRIARS ON THE BOARDS... Sophomore Olivia Orlando leads the Friars in rebounding through two games, with an average of 7.5 boards per contest. Orlando recorded a career-high nine rebounds against Quinnipiac on Nov. 15. Seven of her nine boards came off of the defensive glass, which also marked a career high. Orlando is currently ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in rebounding.
ALYSSA GEARY MAKING AN IMPACT OFF THE BENCH... Alyssa Geary has averaged 19.5 minutes per game off the bench, and has made a significant impact on the court for Providence. She is shooting a team-best .714 from the field, having hit 5-of-7 shot attempts. She also ranks second in rebounding (4.0 rpg) and leads the team in blocked shots (2.0 bpg). Her 2.0 blocked shots per game are tied for first in the BIG EAST.
BOUNCE BACK... Jovana Nogic was held to six points in the Friars' loss to Quinnipiac on Nov. 15. Last season, Nogic was held to single digits in the scoring column six times. Each time, she bounced back to score 24-or-more points in the following game.
KAELA WEBB NETS MOST POINTS IN COLLEGIATE DEBUT AT PROVIDENCE SINCE 2013... Freshman guard Kaela Webb came off the bench to score 15 points in her collegiate debut with the Friars against Penn State (Nov. 8). Her 15 points are the most by a freshman at Providence in their collegiate debut since Sarah Beal '17 posted 20 points vs. UMass Lowell on Nov. 9, 2013. She was 6-11 from the field (.545), including 2-4 shooting from three-point territory. She also recorded one rebound, two assists and two steals in 23 minutes of action.
SHARING THE ROCK... Providence dished 17 assists on 29 made field goals in its season opener at Penn State. Last season, the Friars recorded 17-or-more assists in just two games. PC dished a season-high 20 assists vs. Savannah State (11/21/17) and 17 assists against Xavier (1/19/18).
JOVANA NOGIC NAMED TO ANN MEYERS DRYSDALE AWARD WATCH LIST... On Oct. 23, it was announced that Jovana Nogic was named to the 20-player watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award, which is presented annually to the top shooting guard in NCAA Division I. It marks the second-straight season that Nogic has been featured on the watch list.
JOVANA NOGIC FEATURED ON 11-PLAYER PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM... Jovana Nogic was named to the 2018-19 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Oct. 25 at the league's annual media day at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Nogic is one of 11 players to earn preseason recognition. It marks the second-straight year that she has earned Preseason All-BIG EAST honors. Nogic was named an All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention honoree at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season.
1,000-POINT MILESTONE WITHIN REACH FOR MADDIE JOLIN... Maddie Jolin has recorded 769 career points during her career. She posted her best offensive season a year ago, totaling 330 points for an average of 10.6 points per game. Through two games, Jolin is averaging 9.5 points per game. She needs 231 points to become the 35th player in program history to score 1,000 points.
NOGIC RANKS 15TH ON FRIARS' ALL-TIME SCORING LIST... Jovana Nogic owns 1,264 career points (13.7 ppg) as a Friar. She currently ranks 15th on the Providence's all-time scoring list. Through two games this season, she has jumped three spots on the career scoring list and is within seven points of the next three players ranked above her: Dottie VanGheem '90 (1,267), Kerry Phayre '83 (1,269) and Tori Rule '15 (1,271).
FRIARS RETURN TOP-FOUR SCORERS FROM 2017-18... Providence College returns its top-four scorers from a season ago, led by Jovana Nogic (17.1 ppg) and Maddie Jolin (10.6 ppg). Clara Che finished third on the team in scoring average (6.9 ppg), followed by Chanell Williams (6.7 ppg). In all, the four players combined for 1,281 of the team's 1,850 points, accounting for 69.2-percent of the Friars' offense.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE WELCOMES SIX NEWCOMERS TO THE ROSTER... The Friars' seven returning players from the 2017-18 campaign will be joined by six newcomers on the roster. First-year players include guards Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.), Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Maya Klein (Stamford, Conn.), in addition to forwards Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia), Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) and Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.).
LOOKING BACK AT 2017-18 SEASON... The Friars finished the 2017-18 campaign with a 10-21 overall record and a 3-15 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence fell to Butler in overtime, 73-67, in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round, held at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill.
FRIARS PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN BIG EAST PRESEASON COACHES' POLL... Providence College was picked to finish ninth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, released on Oct. 25 at Madison Square Garden during the league's annual media day. DePaul and Marquette are co-favorites to win the league title, with each securing five first-place votes and 77 points.
FRIARS CLAIM A WINNING RECORD IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY IN BACK-TO-BACK SEASONS... The Friars finished non-conference play in 2017-18 with a 7-5 mark and secured a winning record in non-conference action in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the 2010-11 and 2011-12 campaigns. In 2016-17, Providence finished the non-conference portion of their schedule with an 8-4 record.
DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS... The Friars recorded double-digit wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2010-11 and 2011-12. Last season, Providence recorded 10 wins and in 2016-17 it totaled 12 victories.
PROVIDENCE SET THREE-POINT PERCENTAGE RECORD IN BACK-TO-BACK SEASONS... The Friars have set a single-season record for three-point field goal percentage each of the last two seasons. In 2016-17, Providence shot a school-record 0.374 from beyond the arc (192-514). Last season, the Friars topped the single-season record book, once again, shooting 0.391 from three-point territory (192-491).
MORE FROM DEEP... In each of the last two seasons, the Friars have connected on 192 three-point field goals. Providence's 192 three-pointers during the 2017-18 and 2016-17 are tied for the third-most triples in program history for a single season.
FRIARS COME UP JUST SHORT... Ten of the Friars' 21 losses during the 2017-18 season were decided by a single-digit margin, including three games by five points or less.
BIG EAST ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM SELECTION CHANELL WILLIAMS RETURNS TO COURT FOR SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGN... Providence College point guard Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) was named a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in 2017-18. Williams played all 31 games for the Friars and appeared in the starting line-up 17 times. She averaged 6.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and a team-best 2.6 assists per game. During BIG EAST Conference regular-season play, Williams averaged 8.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Williams was a two-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honoree (Jan. 8 and Jan. 22). She recorded nine double-digit scoring games for the Friars, including eight during BIG EAST action. The rookie tallied a career-high 16 points against Seton Hall on Jan. 5. She also posted career highs of seven rebounds vs. Seton Hall (Jan. 26), five assists vs. Yale (Nov. 29) and five steals vs. Marquette (Jan. 10). Williams became the 17th player from Providence College to earn BIG EAST All-Freshman or All-Rookie Team honors, and the first since Sarah Beal in 2014.
MADDIE JOLIN LOOKING TO BUILD OFF OF IMPRESSIVE JUNIOR CAMPAIGN... Last season, Maddie Jolin put together a solid junior campaign. She finished second among her teammates in scoring (10.6 ppg) and led the Friars in rebounding (4.7 rpg). Jolin also added 1.8 assists and 1.0 steal per contest. She found her rhythm from three-point territory and led the team in field-goal percentage from beyond the arc (.439, 66-158).
JOLIN FINISHED SECOND AMONG BIG EAST PLAYERS IN 3PT FIELD-GOAL PERCENTAGE... Maddie Jolin finished second among BIG EAST players in three-point field-goal percentage last season (.439, 66-158). Her percentage also ranked 21st among NCAA Division I players.
JOVANA NOGIC NOTCHED THIRD-HIGHEST SCORING TOTAL BY A JUNIOR IN PROGRAM HISTORY... Jovana Nogic's 513 points in 2017-18 marked the third-highest single-season scoring total by a junior in program history. The top-two on the list include, Friars' all-time leading scorer Tracy Lis (759) and Nadine Malcolm (628). Additionally, Nogic was the first player to eclipse 500 points in a single season since Chelsea Marandola (613) during the 2009-10 campaign.
NOGIC HOLDS SINGLE-SEASON RECORD FOR THREE-POINTERS... Jovana Nogic set the Providence College single-season record for three-pointers, with 91, during the 2016-17 season. The previous record was held by Julie Wheeler '98, which she set during the 1994-95 season, with 82.
NEARING CAREER RECORD FOR THREE POINTERS... The Providence College record for three-pointers made in a career was set by Julie Wheeler '98, with 252, in 101 games (1994-98). Senior guard Jovana Nogic has hit 235-572 attempts from three-point territory (.411). Over the course of her career, Nogic has averaged 77 three-pointers per season. She needs 17 three-pointers to tie Wheeler's record.
NOGIC RANKS AMONG NCAA ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS FROM BEYOND THE ARC... Jovana Nogic ranks eighth among active NCAA Division I players in career three-point percentage. Nogic has hit 41.1-percent of her attempts from beyond the arc (235-572). Additionally, she ranks 18th among active NCAA career leaders in three-pointers made per game (2.55) and 13th in three-point field goals made (235).
FRIARS IN OVERTIME GAMES UNDER JIM CROWLEY... Providence is 2-4 in overtime games under the direction of second-year Friars Head Coach Jim Crowley. In his first season with the program (2016-17), Providence posted a 1-2 mark in overtime games. In 2017-18, Providence compiled a 1-2 mark in overtime. The Friars are 2-0 in overtime games when they score 90+ points, and they are 0-3 in overtime vs. BIG EAST Conference opponents.
WHAT'S NEXT... The Friars return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 27 against Boston College. The game will be played at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass., and is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
