Chanell Williams Nets 25 Points To Lift Providence Over Sacred Heart, 62-52

PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Sacred Heart, 62-52, on Nov. 21 in Providence, R.I.  The Friars (1-2) entered the day with an 0-2 mark, having lost each of its first two games by a combined total of six points. Sophomore Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) eclipsed the 20-point plateau for the first time in her career with 25 points to lead the Friars. The Pioneers fell to 2-2 with the loss.
 
Providence went on an 8-0 run to take an 8-2 lead early in the first quarter. Sacred Heart closed the quarter with an 11-5 scoring advantage, including a 6-0 run to tie the score, 13-13.
 
The Pioneers took an 18-17 lead in the second quarter, but the Friars would regain the lead on their next possession with a pair of free throws from Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.). Fellow freshman Earlette Scott (Brookly, N.Y.) then converted a traditional three-point play, followed by a turnaround jumper by Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) to mount a six-point lead (24-18) with 5:37 on the clock.
 
Sacred Heart halted the run with a three-point bucket at the 5:18 mark, but Providence responded with a 10-2 spurt to gain its largest lead of the game (34-23) with 15-seconds left. Adrianne Hagood knocked down a three-pointer with two-seconds left for Sacred Heart to get her squad within eight at halftime (34-26).
 
Williams paced the Friars with 14 first-half points. Olivia Orlando (Winthrop, Mass.) hauled in eight rebounds for Providence in the opening 20 minutes.
 
Sacred Heart crept within one point (34-33) as it started the third quarter with a 7-0 scoring run. Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) gave the Friars their first points of the quarter at the 6:10 mark with a pair of free throws.  The Pioneers would tie the game on a three-pointer by Erin Storck, but the Orlando converted a put-back off of her 10threbound of the day at 4:49.  The two teams traded buckets to close the quarter, resulting in a three-point lead for the Pioneers (46-43).
 
Providence used a 14-2 run to start the fourth quarter, and out-scored Sacred Heart 19-6 overall in the final frame to take the win.  Williams notched nine points in the quarter and finished the day with a career-best 25 points.  She shot 12-16 from the field and added three assists and two rebounds.
 
Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) added 11 points, five rebounds and a game-high three steals. Orlando hauled in a career-best 12 boards to lead the Friars on the glass for the third-straight game.
 
The Friars completed the game with a 47-28 advantage on the glass, marking the most rebounds in a game for Providence since Dec. 21, 2016 vs. Monmouth (47).
 
Sacred Heart was led by Adrianne Hagood's 21 points.  Erin Storck, who exploded for 29 points in last year's meeting, added nine points and dished two assists for the Pioneers.
 
The Friars will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 27 against Boston College at 7:00 p.m.  The game will be played at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
