CHESTNUT HILL, MASS.– The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Boston College, 61-57, on Nov. 27 at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. It marked Boston College's first loss of the season (6-1), as the Friars improved to 2-2 on the year. The victory was the first for Providence at Conte Forum since Feb. 17, 1996. It's also the first back-to-back victories over the Eagles since 1993-1994.
Sophomore
Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) scored seven of her 13 points in the decisive fourth quarter, including four points in the final 14 seconds to seal the victory. She finished the game 5-8 from the field and added six rebounds and one assist.
The game was tied, 47-47, heading into the fourth quarter. Providence took a 54-51 lead with 5:20 remaining, but the Eagles responded with four-unanswered points to take a 55-54 lead with 3:30 on the clock. Williams converted a traditional three-point play to go ahead by two at the 1:38 mark (57-55).
Neither team could find a bucket over the course of the next minute until Emma Guy hit a jump shot for Boston College with 37-seconds left to knot the game, 57-57. Williams scored the final four points of the game, including a pair of free throws to seal it for Providence with eight seconds left.
Freshman
Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) scored a career-high 13 points to join Williams for the team lead in scoring, and added six rebounds. She shot 4-7 from the field, including 4-5 from beyond the arc.
Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) netted 12 points and hauled in six rebounds. Fellow senior
Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) narrowly missed a double-double on eight points and nine rebounds. She also dished a team-high three assists.
Boston College led 9-5 midway through the first quarter, but the Friars managed to tie the game, 13-13, to end the opening frame. Freshman forward
Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) cashed in on an offensive board with four seconds left on the clock to knot the game and become the sixth different player to score for the Friars.
In the second quarter, Providence gained a four-point advantage with 6:28 on the clock. The Eagles used a 12-0 run, which lasted just over five minutes to mount a 28-20. Senior guard Jolin halted the run on a lay-up off of a turnover with just under a minute on the clock to make the score 28-22. Providence held a 5-4 scoring edge in the final 44-seconds of the half to cut the deficit to five (32-27) at the break.
Boston College held a 9-2 advantage on the scoreboard in points off of turnovers as the Friars committed 17 miscues. Providence kept the game within reach from beyond the three-point arc, hitting 4-of-9 attempts from deep (.444). Eight different Friars cracked the scoring column, led by Nogic and Geary, who each tallied six points.
Providence opened the third quarter with an 11-4 scoring run to take a 38-36 lead. The teams traded baskets and found themselves deadlocked at 47-47 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Friars return to action on Thursday, Nov. 29 against non-conference foe Yale. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
