PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team is ready to continue BIG EAST play at home against St. John's and Seton Hall. The Friars will start the weekend with a match against the Red Storm on Friday, Oct. 5 at 6:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall. Providence will then finish weekend play with a match against the Pirates on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1:00 p.m.
SCOUTING THE FRIARS: The Providence College Friars head into the weekend with an overall record of 7-8 and a BIG EAST record of 1-3. Providence last played on the weekend of Sept. 28-29 against Xavier and Butler. The Friars dropped both matches in straight sets.
Senior
Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) leads the Friars' attack this season. Impellizeri has a total of 173 kills and a hitting percentage of .335, ranking her sixth in the conference. Impellizeri's 3.26 kills per set also ranks sixth in the BIG EAST.
Juniors
Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) and
Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) have also contributed to the Friars' offense by tallying 147 and 134 kills, respectively.
Lindsey Schaible (Tampa, Fla.) leads the Friars in service aces, with 13, while
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) is not far behind, with 10.
Barber has been the setter for the Friars this season with 532 total assists. Barber's 10.04 assists per set ranks her second in the BIG EAST for the third week in a row.
Freshmen
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.), the Friars' defensive specialist, has been a key player for the Friars this season. Taylor leads Providence in digs, recording 250, and her 4.72 digs per set ranks fifth in the BIG EAST. Taylor is the only freshman ranked in the top-five for digs. She has also added 43 assists for the Friars.
Contributing to the Providence defense are Barber and Alderson recording 121 and 110 digs, respectively. Impellizeri and Schaible are strong forces on the front line, totaling 45 and 36 blocks apiece.
SCOUTING THE RED STORM: The St. John's Red Storm have an overall record of 14-6 and are 3-2 in the BIG EAST, ranking third in conference standings. St. John's last played against Villanova on Sept. 25 and Seton Hall on Sept. 29. The Red Storm went 1-1 that week.
Rachele Rastelli has been the offensive threat for St. John's, recording 210 kills. Kayley Wood, Nia Diaz and Efrosini Alexakou have contributed to the Red Storm's attack with 165, 150 and 148 kills, respectively. Diaz's .363 hitting percentage ranks second in the BIG EAST, while Alexakou's 3.15 kills per set ranks eighth in the conference.
Erica Di Manulo and Rastelli tallied 23 and 22 service aces to lead St. John's, thus far, this season. Di Manulo and Rastelli are ranked 10
thand eighth in the BIG EAST.
Di Manulo has been the Red Storm's setter for the season. She has totaled 776 assists and her 9.70 assists per set average ranks third in the BIG EAST.
St. John's has a well-balanced defense with four players recording at least 100 digs thus far, this season. Amanda Sanabia has led the defense for the Red Storm tallying 423 digs on the season and her 5.22 digs per set ranks second in the BIG EAST. Di Manulo, Lexie Lobdell and Alexakou have also contributed to St. John's defense with 178, 144 and 115 digs, respectively.
On the defensive front line, Hanna Wagner leads the Red Storm in blocks (74) and ranks fourth in the BIG EAST.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES:The Seton Hall Pirates have an overall record of 5-13 and are 0-5 in the BIG EAST. Seton Hall last played against Georgetown on Sept. 26 and St. John's on Sept. 29. The Pirates lost both matches in straight sets.
Abby Thelen and Caitlin Koska have been the offensive threats for Seton Hall, recording 232 and 184 kills, respectively. Thelen's 3.62 kills per set ranks fifth in the BIG EAST, while Koska's 2.97 kills per set ranks ninth in the conference. Koska and Sophia Coffey tallied 16 and 14 service aces to lead Seton Hall, thus far, this season.
Coffey and Maggie Cvelbar have been the Pirates' setters for the season. Coffey has totaled 344 assists and her 5.64 assists per set ranks eighth in the BIG EAST. Cvelbar has recorded 303 assists and her 5.05 assists per set ranks tenth in the conference.
Seton Hall has a well-balanced defense with four players recording at least 100 digs thus far, this season. Koska has led the defense for the Pirates tallying 159 digs on the season. Eden Dolezal, Cvelbar and Mira Higginbotham have also contributed to Seton Hall's defense with 147, 146 and 143 digs, respectively. Dolezal's 3.59 digs per set ranks ninth in the BIG EAST.
On the defensive front line, Amanda Rachwal and Haylee Gasser lead the Red Pirates in blocks, with 49 and 48.
WHAT'S NEXT: The Friars will travel to Villanova, Pa. and Washington, D.C. to face Villanova and Georgetown on Oct. 12-13.
