NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Providence College volleyball team won its matches against Fordham and Hartford in the Columbia University Tournament on Sept. 17. The Friars defeated Fordham, 3-1, and Hartford, 3-1.
The Friars efforts were highlighted by senior Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) and sophomore Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) as both recorded double-doubles. Fitzgerald tallied a team high 16 kills and 16 digs while Onyundo recorded 12 kills and 12 digs. Defensive specialist Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) led Providence's defense, recording 27 digs. Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) totaled 41 assists for the Friars.
Fordham's Olivia Fairchild achieved a double-double for the Rams, tallying 14 kills and 11 digs. Fordham also had five players with double digit digs.
The Friars carried their momentum into their second match of the day against Hartford. The Friars dropped the first set 24-26, before taking the next three, 25-21, 25-23 and 28-26. Onyundo recorded her second double-double of the day with a team leading 14 kills and 13 digs. Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) also had a strong attacking match, tallying 13 kills. Clark recorded an impressive 48 assists in the four set match. Cruz totaled 25 digs for Providence.
Hartford had three players with double digit kills and three players with double digit digs in the loss.
The Friars return to the court on Sept. 20 to face Bryant at home at 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
