PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team won its second match of the Friar Classic to improve its record to 9-1, including a 2-0 mark in the tournament. The Friars have not lost a match since their season opener, winning nine straight matches.
The Friars dropped a back and forth first set, 22-25. The offense continued to be balanced as Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) had three kills, while Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.), Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) and Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) each had two kills. Defensive specialist Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) led Providence with eight digs.
Providence clicked into form in the second set. The Friars gained a lead halfway through the set and never relinquished it, winning 25-19. Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) recorded 12 assists in the set. Onyundo began to take control of the offense as she recorded four kills.
In the third set, the Friars took a lead 3-2 and then continued to build, leading by as much as eight points during the set. Two-consecutive service aces by Cruz helped establish the Providence momentum. Onyundo continued her dominance, tallying five kills on eight attempts.
The fourth set proved to be a nail biter. Down by four, 14-18, the Friars went on to win the next five straight points to take a 19-18 lead. This set up a final stretch run that saw Providence and La Salle go point for point, with neither team looking ready to give up. Onyundo smashed a kill to the back corner of the court to give Providence the lead and momentum that carried the Friars to take the match, 26-24.
Onyundo was Providence's leading attacker, finishing the match with 15 kills. Fitzgerald and Veverka were strong in support, both recording eight kills. Cruz finished the game with 22 digs and Clark had 38 assists.
La Salle had strong matches from Devin Corah and Jensen Sharrits. Corah tallied 19 kills and Sharrits recorded 22 digs.
Providence finishes the Friar Volleyball Classic with a match against Quinnipiac at 5:30 p.m. [Sept. 10].
