PROVIDENCE R.I.- The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by Quinnipiac in the final match of the 12th Annual Friar Volleyball Classic, 3-2. The Friars drop to 9-2 on the season.
The first set was hard fought, with the Friars taking the win, 25-22. Providence’s balanced offence was a key in the set as the Friars had Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.), Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) and Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) with four kills each. Defensive specialist Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) had some key digs to keep plays alive. At the end of the first set, Cruz and Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had four digs each.
The second set was another back and forth battle. Despite a strong defensive effort by Cruz, seven digs, the Friars fell in the set, 17-25.
Quinnipiac pulled away early in the third set and won 17-25. Clark recorded nine assists in the set to lead the Friars.
Providence would not go quietly, however, as they began the fourth set with hustle and heart to build a 14-7 lead. Behind an impressive six kills on six total attacks by Impellizeri, the Friars built a lead as large as 11 points and won the set 25-14.
The fifth and final set proved to follow in the footsteps of the sets before it as the teams went point for point for much of the way. In the end, however, Quinnipiac pulled away and won the set and match with a 15-12 victory.
Despite the loss, the Friars had many bright spots in the match. Impellizeri tied her career high in kills with 16 and also recorded seven blocks. Fitzgerald, Veverka, Abigail Dix (Gibsonia, Pa.) and Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) , all had strong matches recording 11, 10, nine and nine digs, respectively. Clark recorded a double-double with a 54 assist and 12 dig night. Cruz led the Friars with 18 digs and Kara Mason (Boca Raton, Fla.) also had a strong showing, tallying 10 digs.
Quinnipiac had four players with double digit kills, led by Natalie Alechko with 13, and had three players with double digit digs, led by Alejandra Rodriguez with 16.
The Friars return to action on Sept. 16-17 for Columbia Classic at Columbia. Providence will play UMCB and Columbia on Sept. 16 and will play Forham and Hartford on Sept. 17.
