SCOUTING PROVIDENCE COLLEGE: The Providence College women's volleyball team finished the 2014 season with a 6-26 overall record, including a 2-16 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. It marked the Friars' first season of competition as members of BIG EAST after competing in the America East from 2010-13. Providence previously competed in the BIG EAST Conference as a charter member from 1977 to 2001, and then competed as an independent from 2002-09.
The Friars have the bulk of their team returning to the court this season and welcome six talented newcomers. The squad's notable returners include defensive specialist Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.), setter Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) and two of the team's top attacking players in Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) and Kayla Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.).
Cruz led the Friars in digs last year, with 527 (4.70 per set). She also had a team-best 28 service aces. Cruz finished the season ranked second in the BIG EAST Conference in digs and fifth in service aces. During her first two seasons at Providence, Cruz has recorded 1,047 career digs. Currently, Cruz holds the No. 2 (527 in 2014) and No. 3 (520 in 2013) spots on the Friars' single-season digs list. She was a three-time All-Tournament Team selection last season, marking the most All-Tournament Team honors for a Friar in 2014.
Wiesler led the Friars with 888 assists (8.07 aps) in 2014. She was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 15. Fitzgerald led the Friars in kills last season (265), while Johnson finished third among her teammates (159).
SCOUTING SACRED HEART: The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team finished the 2014 season with a 9-19 overall record and a 4-10 mark in the Northeast Conference (NEC). The Pioneers return their top-three attacking players from last season, including Sarah Krufka (347 kills; 3.44 kps), Tori Kemper (293 kills; 2.84 kps) and Makayla Dole (265 kills; 2.68 kps).
Ana Gonzalez also returns to the line-up, having led the team in digs (409) and service aces (43) in 2014. Kemper was second on the team in digs last season, with 214, followed by Dole (209). Dole led the Pioneers with 13 solo blocks.
SCOUTING BOSTON COLLEGE: The Boston College Eagles finished the 2014 season with an 11-18 overall record, including a 6-12 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The squad's six conference wins are the most since 2007, when the team posted an 8-14 mark. Since then, BC recorded more than two ACC regular-season wins just twice.
Senior Katty Workman is on track become the Eagles' all-time leader in kills by season's end. She enters the 2015 campaign with 1,258 career kills – 191 shy of the school record set in 2008. Workman is currently the school's leader in career kills per set (3.77), and also looks to officially establish the record upon completion of her final season. Last year, Workman recorded 408 kills (3.64 kills per set) and finished third among her teammates in digs, with 288.
