The Providence College men's lacrosse team fell to Hofstra, 15-4, on Saturday, March 14 in Hempstead, N.Y. The Friars drop to 4-3 on the season, while the Pride improve to 2-4. Four different Friars scored in the game, and goalkeeper Peter Badgley (Summit, N.J.) finished with 14 saves.
Providence got on the scoreboard first as Joshua Keller (Grand Rapids, Mich.) found the back of the net just 3:56 into the game, unassisted. It marked Keller's sixth goal of the year. Hofstra answered with back-to-back goals at 5:51 and 3:39. Brier Davis struck first, man-up, off a feed from Mike Malave. Brendan Kavanagh followed with an unassisted tally to put the Pride ahead, 2-1. The Friars tied the game, 2-2, with eight seconds left in the first quarter as Keenan Assaraf (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) notched his second goal of the season, unassisted.
In the second quarter, the Pride took control of the game, with four unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead at halftime.
Providence got back on the board just 1:21 into the third quarter to get within three (6-3), as Buck McClure (Dallas, Texas) posted his ninth goal of the season. A little over one-minute later, Hofstra reeled off the first of eight straight goals to take a commanding 14-3 lead, with 3:21 left in the third.
Will Mazzone (Stony Brook, N.Y.) recorded Providence's fourth goal of the game, and his 11th of the year, to start the fourth quarter (10:37). Hofstra finished off the scoring with an insurance goal from Mitch Kingsley with 1:15 left on the clock.
The Friars struggled at the face-off "X", winning just three of 23 opportunities. Hofstra held a decisive edge in the ground-ball game, 34-16, and also out-shot Providence, 46-15. The second and third quarters saw a combined 31 shot attempts for the Pride, while the Friars managed just five chances at the cage. That shot differential yielded a 12-1 scoring advantage for Hofstra.
Sam Llinares recorded a game-high eight points on four goals and four assists. Malave, Davis and Korey Hendrickson each tallied two goals in the victory
Providence returns to action on Tuesday, March 24 against Bryant University. The game will be played in Smithfield, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
