PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team defeated Vermont, 12-9, on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Ray Treacy Track and Field Complex. The Friars improved to 1-1, while Vermont moved to 0-3.

Senior Buck McClure (Dallas, Texas) paced the Friars' offense with three goals and two assist for the game.

To start, the Catamounts jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal from Cam Milligan with 12 minutes left in the first. At 10:34 minutes left, the Friars responded to even the score at one with a goal from junior Will Mazzone (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and an assist contributed by senior Robert Sheehan (Darnestown, Md.). Vermont would come back less than a minute later with a goal from James Barlow and an assist from Milligan, 2-1. The rest of the first quarter would see four more Friar-goals to end the quarter with a three-point advantage, 5-2. McClure, sophomore Keenan Assaraf (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.), senior Greg FitzMaurice (Huntington, N.Y.), and freshman Jake Cook (Guelph, Ontario, Canada) would each score a goal back-to-back.

In the second quarter, the Friars would continue to build up their lead with another goal from McClure with 12:30 remaining and a goal from junior Nolan Fillet (Rockville, Md.). Vermont responded with 1:27 left in the second quarter with a goal from Milligan and an assist from Matt Gudas. The first half ended with a four point Friar lead, 7-3.

In the third quarter, the Catamounts found the back of the net early on (12:26) from Gudas. The Friars responded with back-to-back goals from McClure and Cook to get a five point lead, 9-4. With just over five minutes left in the third quarter, Vermont's James Barlow, Alex Stanko, and Milligan each found the back of the net and came back with three goals to lessen the Friars lead to 9-7.

The Catamounts' Barlow scored early on in the fourth quarter to trail the Friars by one point, 9-8. Junior Michael Perritine (Farmingdale, N.Y.) found the back of the net for his first of two goals of the game, with an assist from Assaraf. Vermont's Milligan would score the Catamounts final goal of the game. The Friars' Perettine and Mazzone each scored goals to close out the game, 12-9.

In net for the Friars, senior Peter Badgley (Summit, N.J.) registered 17 saves in all 60 minutes of play.

"I credit Vermont to getting off to a good start and also coming back from a large lead," said Head Coach Chris Gabrielli. "We had some good efforts indiviudually. Badgley was solid in net, Cook, our LSM had a great presendse on the field with two goals and great momentum, and Perritine had two critical goals that allowed us to stand up."

The Friars return to action to host Boston University at 4:00 p.m. on Feb. 24 at the Ray Treacy Track and Field Complex.
