PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team won two matches in the final day of the 10th Annual Friar Classic on Saturday, at Alumni Hall. Providence defeated Fairleigh Dickinson in the first match, 3-1, and swept Quinnipiac, 3-0, in the second. The Friars now stand at 2-9 on the season.
In the FDU match, the Knights came out and won the first set 25-20. The Friars then went on to win the next three sets, 27-25, 25-19 and 25-15. Providence had more kills than FDU in every set (16-12, 20-13, 18-15 and 19-10).
Junior Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) had a career-high in both assists (56) and digs (22). Sophomore Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) also had a career-high, with 22 kills in the match. She also added 12 digs. Three other Friars reached double-digit kills, with freshman Abbie Trzeciak (Cranberry Township, Pa.) tallying 15, senior Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) posting 12 and senior Annie Russian (Round Rock, Texas) contributing 11. Sophomore Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) recorded 28 assists and three service aces.
The Knights were led by Carly O'Sullivan and Caroline Laton who had 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Allison Butler tallied 33 assists and Deborah Hong has a team-high 18 digs.
The Friars swept Quinnipiac with set scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-21. Fitzgerald reached double-digits in kills with 13. Wiesler led the team in assists with 28 and Cruz powered the defense with 22 digs. Wiesler also tallied four service aces in the match. As a team, the Friars had seven blocks. Providence out-hit Quinnipiac in every set (13-5, 12-9 and 13-12).
Fitzgerald and Trzeciak were named to the Friar Classic All-Tournament Team following the match.
Quinnipiac was led by Allison Leigh who had seven kills. Sierra Dawson recorded 22 assists and Cody Michaels registered 13 digs.
"We played as a team in both matches today," said Head Coach Margot Royer Johnson. "Everyone came to win and executed many of the things we have been working on in practice. It was a total team effort."
The Friars next play in the CCSU Blue Devil Invitational on Friday, Sept. 19 and Saturday, Sept. 20 in New Britain, Conn.
