Women's Soccer Comes From Behind To Defeat Syracuse, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - On Sunday, September 16 the Providence College women's soccer team hosted Syracuse for its second BIG EAST game of the season. The Friars came from behind to beat the Orange, 2-1, with both goals coming from freshman Lauren Elia (Erie, Pa.). With the victory over Syracuse the Friars' win streak improves to six games, and now own a 7-2-1 record (2-0-0 BIG EAST). The Orange fall to 4-4-1 (1-1-0 BIG EAST).
Syracuse recorded the first goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 50th minute of the match. Jenna Rickan's strike found the back of the net, giving the Orange a 1-0 lead.
In the 69th minute Elia scored the equalizer, as she brought down a free ball in the box and finished it from 10 yards out. It marked Elia's second goal as a Friar.
In the 71st minute junior Alyssa Martino (Plainville, Conn.) served a ball over the top of the Syracuse defenders. Elia ran on to the service, striking the ball over the Syracuse goalkeeper. Elia's second goal of the game would serve as the game winner. Providence was able to close out the second half and hold on to its 2-1 lead.
Elia has recorded three goals on the season and has tallied six points for the Friars, thus far.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goudreault (Sherborn, Mass.) recorded her fifth win of the season, with one save.
The Friars carry their six-game win streak on the road to Villanova, Pa., where they will face Villanova in a BIG EAST match-up on Friday, September 21 at 4:00 p.m.
