Providence, R.I. - The Providence College women's soccer team will play local rival Brown University on Wednesday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. The Friars will travel across town to Brown's Stevenson Field to compete. The last time the teams were matched-up was in 2005 when Providence defeated the Bears, 2-1.
The Friars posted a 1-1-1 last week and seek another win to increase their overall record to 2-1-4. Senior Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) and Junior Mary Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) each had two goals against Holy Cross in the team's 5-0 win on Wednesday, August 31. Seniors Taylor Bartini (Suffield, Conn.) and Laura Di Clemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) each had a goal on the week. Bartini's came in the match-up with Holy Cross, while Di Clemente scored the lone goal for the Friars against Central Connecticut State as they fell to the Blue Devils, 2-1. Collins leads the team in points with three goals and one assist for seven points. Vercollone notched two goals and two assists this week, for a total of six points. Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Walker (Metuchen, N.J.) notched her second shutout of the season this week, in a 0-0 tied with Yale on September 4.
BROWN (1-0): The Brown women's soccer team opened its season defeating Liberty, 1-0, on Friday, September 2. Freshman Allie Reilly scored the game winning goal for the Bears. On Sunday, September 4, the Bears defeated Coastal Carolina, 3-1. Junior Eliza Marshall scored two of the three goals while sophomore Kiersten Berg completed the scoring for Brown with one goal. Marshall now leads the team in points with four. Sophomore goalkeeper Amber Bledsoe started both games for the Bears. She made five saves in the two games and did not allow any goals. Classmate and fellow goalkeeper, MC Barrett, also played in the Bears two games, allowing Coastal Carolina's lone goal. Barrett has four saves on the season.
