PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) have been named volleyball team captains by Providence College Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson. The seniors are part of a rotation that returns five starters from a season ago, as the Friars will compete in the America East for the second season.

Fletcher was a second team All-America East honoree in 2010 after leading the league in points per set (4.69) and blocks per set (1.17). She also was second in hitting percentage (.332), fourth in kills per set (3.69) and seventh in aces per set (0.30). She has led the Friars in hitting percentage and kills the past two seasons and her career hitting percentage of .282 currently ranks third all time at PC. Fletcher also made the 2010 America East Fall Commissioner's Honor Roll, for athletes who post a grade-point average of 3.50 or better.

"(Lauren) is a born leader and an obvious choice as captain as she is our strongest offensive threat and our go to player," Royer-Johnson said. "She can be counted on when the game is on the line. In addition, `Flitch' leads many of our volunteer activities off the court and is a role model in the classroom."

Morrison will be in her third season as the primary setter for the Friars. She led the team with 7.55 assists per set in 2010, a total which ranked fifth in America East. She also boasts one of the top service games in the league, as her total of 42 aces ranked third in the conference. Morrison is on pace to crack the program's top-five in career assists and career service aces. Like Fletcher, Morrison was selected to the 2010 America East Fall Commissioner's Honor Roll.

"Carly is a natural leader as the setter on our team," said Royer-Johnson on Morrison. "But above that, she takes initiative and is a mentor off the court to our younger players. I fully trust her to run the offense and be the pillar of strength and intelligence when we most need her."

The Friars open the season on Friday, August 26, when they take on Canisius at the La Salle Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa. The season's first serve is set for 2:00 p.m. Providence will also face Morgan State, St. Peter's and the host Explorers over the weekend.
