NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Providence College lacrosse team fell in its final game of the season, 10-7, at Rutgers on Saturday, May 7. The Friars conclude the season with a record of 3-12, 0-6 in BIG EAST play, while the Scarlet Knights finish 6-9, 1-5 in league action.
JT Weber (West Hartford, Conn.) led the Friars with a hat trick. Jake Nolan (Westport, Conn.) added a goal and an assist. Mike Feldberg (Voorhees, N.J.) and Steve Lydon (Braintree, Mass.) found the back of the cage in their final game wearing the black and white, while Bryan Annecchino (Darien, Conn.) also scored. Evan Helda (Charlotte, N.C.) notched an assist in his final game as a Friar, while Sean Wright (Silver Spring, Md.) and Daniel Textor (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) notched assists as well. Jake Goodelman (Wantag, N.Y.), also playing in his final game at PC, made a career-high 17 saves while allowing 10 goals. He finishes the season with a 1-8 record.
The Scarlet Knights were led by Kevin Hover, who notched four goals. Scott Klimchak added two goals and an assist. Duncan Clancy notched a goal and three assists. Anthony Terranova and Christopher Mattes each scored a goal, while Will Mangan recorded three assists. Joseph Donnely got the win in the cage, making nine saves while allowing seven goals and improving his record to 5-4.
Hover helped the Scarlet Knights jump out to a 3-2 lead after one period, scoring twice in the frame. He notched the first goal, then Klimchak followed to give Rutgers a 2-0 lead just over four minutes in to the game. Weber responded for the Friars just 28 seconds later, then Lydon tied the game at 2-2 with 9:23 left. Hover's second goal made it 3-2 with 90 seconds left in the period.
The second period saw just one goal, as Annecchino found the back of the cage for PC to tie the game at 3-3, which is where it stood at the break.
The teams traded goals to start the third, as Klimchak scored to put Rutgers up, 4-3, before Feldberg answered to tie it at 4-4. The Scarlet Knights then rattled off two goals in the final two minutes of the period to make it 6-4 entering the fourth. Rutgers used two more goals in the first minute of play in the fourth quarter to build an 8-4 lead. The Friars rallied on back-to-back goals from Weber to make it 8-6 with just over 12 minutes to play. Hover and Clancy found the back of the cage to push the lead back to four goals, 10-6. Nolan scored for PC with 3:19 to play, providing the final margin of 10-7.
Freshman Ryan Shaw did his best to keep Mattes in-check from the faceoff X. Mattes entered the contest having won a BIG EAST-leading 64.5% of his faceoffs, but Shaw won 8-of-19 and Andrew Bromley won a pair of faceoffs, holding Mattes to 52.4% (11-21). Turnovers plagued the Friars, as they made 16 in the contest to just 7 by Rutgers.
Nolan finishes the season as the team leader in points (28) and goals (15). Barton led the squad in assists, with 14. Goodelman posted a .556 save percentage, while Shaw won 51.8% of faceoffs. Lydon capped his career by scoring a goal in each of the last seven contests.
