PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College lacrosse team fell to No. 10 Massachusetts, 14-6, on Tuesday, March 15, at the Friar Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The Friars fall to 2-2 on the season, while the Minutemen improve to 5-1.
The Friars got three goals from junior midfielder Jake Nolan (Westport, Conn.), as well as single goals from freshman midfielder Andrew Barton (Timonium, Md.), senior midfielder Evan Helda (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore midfielder Joe Habib (Arlington, Mass.).
Junior goalie Christian Dzwilewski (Huntington, N.Y.) was solid in the cage, making 10 saves while playing most of the game (58:36). His record drops to 2-2 on the season. Freshman Ryan Shaw (East Hampton, N.Y.) continued his impressive performance on faceoffs. The rookie entered the game second in the nation in faceoffs won and grabbed 18 of 24 draws against the Minutemen to improve his season percentage to .721.
The Minutemen got three-goal performances from Art Kell and Ryan Hantverk. Steve D'Amario, Anthony Biscardi and Colin Fleming each added two goals for UMass, while Mael Walkowiak and Will Manny each notched a goal. Manny and Fleming each added a pair of assists. Tim McCormack made nine saves, while only allowing six goals, to improve his record to 5-1 on the season.
Things remained tight through most of the first half, as each time it looked like the Minutemen were beginning to pull away, the Friars would rally. After UMass took a 7-3 lead, the Friars rallied with a pair of goals from Nolan in the last 1:46 of the second quarter, including one with two seconds remaining, to pull within 7-5 at the half.
Unfortunately for the Friars, it would be as close as they would get. The Minutemen outshot PC, 13-3, in the third quarter, outscoring the Friars 5-1 in the period and building a 12-6 lead entering the fourth. Three of the UMass goals in the third came in the final five minutes of the period, putting the game out of reach.
UMass outshot the Friars (35-27), however PC held the edge on ground balls (27-25) and faceoffs won (18-6). The teams both went 33.3% on extra-man opportunities, as the Minutemen were 1-3 and the Friars were 2-6.
Providence returns to the field this Saturday, March 19, when they open-up BIG EAST play at Georgetown. Faceoff from the nation's capital is set for 1:00 p.m.
