PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Manhattan College in a non-conference affair at Mullaney Gymnasium (24-26, 21-25, 25-16, 19-25). The Friars fall to 4-9 on the season while Manhattan improves to 4-5.
Junior Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) led the Friars in kills, posting 17 while hitting at a .361 clip. Classmate Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) added 12 kills. Nearly all the assists came from junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.), who posted 36. Defensively, sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the way with 23 digs, while senior Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) recorded 14.
The Jaspers placed three in double-figures for kills. They were paced by LaKell Haven's 14 kills, while Diane Strutner and Jaci Rahey each added 11. Manhattan setter Jamie Collareta picked up 46 assists. The Jasper back row saw solid play all around, with both Juilie Bies and Kelsey Huntoon posting 18 digs. Strutner, Collareta and Aurore Kullak all posted double-figure digs as well.
The first set saw both teams trade blows and featured 11 ties and six lead changes. The largest lead came with Manhattan up 20-14, when Providence head coach Margot Royer-Johnson called timeout and her squad responded. A Jasper error sent Morris to the service line and she brought the Friars back within two points, 20-18. Morris later notched a kill to give the Friars a 24-23 lead, but back-to-back kills by Havens and a kill by Stutner sealed the set for Manhattan, 26-24. Fletcher picked up 7 kills in the set, while Hendel added four, but the Japsers' nine blocks were too much for Providence to overcome.
The second set was nearly as dramatic as the first, featuring 10 ties and five lead changes. A huge moment in the match came with the set tied at 18-18 when the Friars thought they had taken a lead on a kill by freshman Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.), but it was ruled neither Jasper blocker tipped the ball on its way out-of-bounds. That gave Manhattan a 19-18 lead and was immediately followed by a Friar error and Havens kill to extend the Jasper lead to 21-18. They would not look back and take the set, 25-21.
After intermission, the Friars came out swinging. Hendel led the way with five kills and every Friar that played in the set notched at least one kill with the exception of Muzzonigro, the Friar libero. Providence hit at a .324 clip as a team and cruised to a 25-16 win in the third.
Manhattan responded in the fourth, led by Strutner. The Jasper captain notched five kills in the fourth set, while Rahey added four. In a set that seemed dominated by bizarre plays, the Providence attack just could not manage to get in sync, hitting only .154 in the set. The Friars trailed 14-6 early, but did manage to make things interesting, thanks in part to four kills by Hendel that helped her squad back within four before Manhattan pulled away for a match-clinching 25-19 win.
The Friars return to the court this Friday and Saturday for three matches at the Bethune-Cookman Beach Bash. In a change from the original schedule, Providence will open up with two matches on Friday, first against Bethune-Cookman at 1:30 p.m., then against Savannah State at 6:30 p.m. They close action on the weekend with a rematch against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at noon.
