DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - The Providence College volleyball team (5-10, 0-0) picked up a sweep in its second match at the Bethune-Cookman Beach Bash, taking down the Savannah State Tigers (25-19, 25-6, 25-16).
Providence was led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who notched ten kills, four service aces and four blocks, while hitting .292. Classmates Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) each added six kills. Junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) picked up 23 assists. Senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) led the defense with 10 digs.
Savannah State was led by Bianca Helton, who notched nine kills. Kaneisha Hamilton picked up 16 digs to anchor the Tiger defense.
The Friars slowly built a lead in the first set, hitting .229 as a team. Dolan picked up four kills to get things started and Providence picked up a 25-19 win.
The second set saw Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson's squad play perhaps their most complete frame of the season. Providence hit at a blistering .450 clip, led by four kills from Fletcher. The Friars registered six service aces on the set and saw runs of 5-0, 7-0 and 5-0 at various stretches. Fletcher also had a run at the service line where she registered aces on three-of-four serves. The Friars picked up a 25-6 win to take control of the match.
The third set saw the Friars struggle a bit early, trailing 5-2, before the service game of Fletcher again got things rolling, taking Providence on a 7-point run to get out to a 9-5 lead. After the Tigers got back within one point, at 12-11, Royer-Johnson took a time out and Providence never looked back, taking the match with a 25-16 win.
The Friars return to the court Saturday, September 18, for a rematch with Bethune-Cookman. The match is set for 12:00 p.m.
